We had a dated 1980’s house with cedar wall behind the fireplace and all the way up to the ceiling which is also clad with cedar. Needed to update but low in cash. Looked to others for ideas and painted wall 'orchid white' to match timber venetian blinds. Left for a week as was not sure what to do with fireplace - ended up looking up rendering on youtube and rendered with concrete and then painted it white to match wall colour 'in outdoor render paint - to take the heat emitted from the wood heater-' leaving the mantle laquered as it was and then also rendered the hearth and painted it in 'ironstone colourbond grey' very happy with the result - took 4 days - cost me only the bag of sand and cement concrete and $120 for the paint to paint the walls and fireplace. Very happy and looks a kind of french provincial style room without a lot of cost.
