Ok here is a photo i just found...This is Queensland Spotted Gum, which is more varient than the NSW Spotted Gum. Friends that have seen it say how gorgeous and different it is...and so so glad we didn't end up going with blackbutt :)

I bit the bullet and paid to get my slate removed and taken away from open plan kitchen, lounge and dining area before getting the new kitchen installed - best thing I ever did although the process was painful - should have paid the extra to get the concrete slab levelled at the same time - anyway I then paid the floating floor company extra money to hire a concrete sander to level the floor before the bamboo boards went down. In the end it all worked out once I managed to clean up the concrete dust - very happy with the bamboo flooring so much better than the old slate. If I was to do it again - I would pay a professional to get the slate up and floor levelled instead of just using the kitchen companies guy to remove the tiles - hopefully they would have a better method of dealing with concrete dust.

Kate is right that the honey-colour is discoloration of the original finish, sometimes caused by UV light. Here is a photo of the same cypress pine flooring which has been sanded back with a clear satin finish. Unless you are putting real timber floorboards down I wouldn't try and match it. I would imagine that the new extension would have a very different feel to the original with materials, heights, glazing and details so there is no need to make the floor consistent - it will be obvious to everybody where the old finishes and the new starts. Just make sure that you spend some decent money on your new floating floor as there is nothing worse then stepping from real timber to a floating floor that feels and looks fake. Make sure you get a sample of your new blackbutt floating floor and lay it against the existing cypress pine to make sure it looks different enough. Hi Bridget, to prevent serious problems with your engineered floor in later life, expansion gaps should be left around the edge of the room, wherever the floor meets a fixed object such as the walls or a doorway. This will allow engineered planks to naturally expand and contract without causing disfigurement to the overall floor. My recommendation would be to consider laying the flooring vertical ( long) towards/away from door entrance. When laying flooring in a short room, you’ll want to add a sense of depth. It will make the room look longer by installing your floor vertically.
