Thanks for reply. Will it look weird to have a staircase with balustrades on both sides, even though all balustrades are matched the same? It looks like a free-standing staircase in the living room.

Yes, I agree they are fairly narrow and I think practicality must trump original design in this regard. You can still remain true to the era, and simply widening the steps to flush with width of verandah will only improve upon the original design. I believe it will also future-proof the steps as I can imagine as people age, they sometimes require the firm arm of someone else to assist them safely up and down the stairs. I have to agree with Mel about the letterbox. IF you are set on mixing styles, then perhaps use the same timber you used for the letterbox to face facade (street facing) of new steps.

I really like the pic that LesleyH posted. The wooden rail will be 'warmer' to the touch too, show less dirt and tie is with the stairs beautifully.....I thin it will 'ground' the whole look because, if I remember rightly, the stairs and front door are the only wooden features and the rest is a lot of very modern light grey/white/shiny features. I think another touch of warmth in the wood will be beautiful.

It is a funny stair with a mixture of styles. The open riser is a more contemporary look, whereas the newel post, balusters and handrail have a very traditional look. Painting it white will not improve this mismatch of styles. If you paint the treads white then you will be regularly re-painting them as painted stair treads wear back to the timber quite quickly with foot traffic. From your photos it looks like you have a traditional, older style home, so you may want to consider replacing the stair with a new stair that has a more traditional look that doesn't look like a stair that was added in cheaply by a builder who had no idea when your first floor extension was done. However, a traditional stair will make your hallway seem more closed in without the open risers, and having the underside enclosed. The other option is to go very contemporary with steel and timber which is visually lighter and is in contrast with the rest of the entry hall.
