What do you wish you knew before moving into your current home?
Comments (62)@Karen Hodge, I hear you!! Sometimes I think the estate agent should carry quite a bit of the blame actually. If they do their job correctly like you see in the adds on TV, they should bring these discrepancies to the attention of the sellers, stand on their morals and say if you can't get it better than this, then you'll have to find someone else to sell your home!! I know you can't make everybody "house proud" but the saying "do unto others" springs to mind. I bet if these same people bought a house not up to scratch, "a current affair" would hear about it but they don't think it wrong to simply walk out on a house that isn't being left nicely for the next family!! I have some friends that recently sold a house in Essendon, Melb and whilst the buyers were back and forth selling their own home, my friends kept watering the plants and even did things like painted out the wardrobes because of the scuff marks made over time!! They cleaned the entire two storey house from top to bottom and finished by mopping the floors as they were exiting. The buyers were so taken by the entire home, they bought it with almost all the furniture that my friends had in it!!...See MoreWhich chore would you most like to skip?
Comments (48)Cleaning the bathroom is a breeze, I have a nylon scrubber that I buy from Coles or Woolies and the cheapest shampoo I can find, after my shower I put a couple of squirts of the shampoo on the scrubber, run it from top to bottom all round my shower ( I have a large double head shower ) and over the floor then spray clean warm water from the top of the wall and let it run down the walls and glass area till the soap has gone, the shower in our 2nd bathroom doesn't have a spray so I use an empty Peters 2 litre icecream container keep filling it up with warm water and run this down the walls, hop out of the shower walk away and let it dry by itself -- once it is dry I have a perfectly streak free shower, for the bath and the vanity basins I use the same method, wipe them over with the scrubber and shampoo, flush with the warm water and leave, wipe the vanity tops, the area around the bath and window area with a damp cloth and hey presto a beautiful clean bathroom, this all takes only a few minutes and I always have a clean bathroom....See MoreNew stove
Comments (3)I would buy the issues on cooktops and stoves from Choice Magazine. You can buy individual issues online of teir test results. I have always found this to be an excellent source of information so that you don't buy a really expensive name when a cheaper version may Choice Magazine website works just as well or even better...See MoreWhat should I do with my lounge room, which doubles as my entry?
Comments (13)Hi Kathryn, making an assumption here but if your wish is to make the room more cohesive, I’d try to pare it back. One way to begin is to, temporarily, remove everything except the essentials - cushions, art, knick knacks, books, small tables etc. Then list what large items you feel don’t ‘fit’ the feel you’re after. The following is a for instance example only: your lounge set and the red armchair are lovely and suit the house. The office chair is a great colour match and mixing modern and traditional can be great, but it takes up a lot of room making the room look a bit cramped. So, do you remove one of the chairs? Or find a smaller desk? Or could one of the other furniture pieces go? Or could the placement of the items be altered for better flow? Only you know what is essential, what feels good to you, what other spaces you have et al. Once you’ve got a plan, which will include where to place the television 😉, bring back the items you love and feel suit your style, group them to enhance the look you want to achieve (Houzz is full of ideas about displaying your treasures effectively), add some pretty time period lighting and you’re good to go. Long term, you might consider getting a framed wicker cover or similar to hide the modern day tech near your front door, if it bothers you. One last thing re the gas fire heater, and I’d at least think about it just on an economic and environmental basis, check out stones as an alternative to the wood fire replicants....See MoreK K
