Not sure what colour cushions will suit my brown leather lounge
Comments (92)Hi Blufitch, Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. The four coffee tables are lovely, but I would probably opt for one of the two top ones. That being said, check the measurements first as these round tables might be significantly larger than your existing Ikea table. Re the potted plant, a taller one would be better, or you can put this one on a plant stand or even on a ceramic stool. But if you feel a mirror would be too much due to your mirrored splashback, leave the plant as it is and hang a framed print above the plant. It doesn't need to be big, but it's important that it s not too small so it doesn't look too "lost" on the wall. It's hard for me to judge the size from here, but a 70x40 frame might be ok. You could have only the yellow canvas above the couch, but you would have to bring in a few more brightly-coloured cushions or throw onto the couch, to compensate for the empty wall. Alternatively, you could also hang a large mirror above the couch. If you decide to do this, I think it would be best to move the canvas back to where it was, and hang the mirror in front of the window, so it reflects the natural light around and gives more depth to the room. The large Ikea Stave mirror (in white stained oak) is very reasonably priced and would work great. Just double check it fits first (it's 70x160)! Tell us how yo go! Comments (5)Hi Juliahocking - thanks for the ideas! Sorry I saw your comments on the weekend and then forgot to come back and update after I had moved the furniture around. I like the idea of moving the sofa and creating two separate spaces within the room. The problem is that the section of the room with the blank wall doesn't have a tv point so would need to get that installed. I moved one of the couches there to face the wall and it felt a little bit cramped, and the other section of the room seemed to have a lot of space to fill without the second couch. Is this what you meant? I found the photos from the real estate listing to show the previous owners set up, they might give a better indication of the space? We moved the TV to the corner because we didn't like it blocking the window, but i don't think the corner is ideal either. Do you think it would work to have a couple of chairs in the "dining" section of the room, or would that be strange to be facing to the back of the couch? Would love any ideas to make the windows prettier. I love the outlook but the brown screens and frames are not very attractive! Timandra Design and Landscaping - thanks! Will start my search for some large pieces of art and colourful cushions. Is it that rug you don't like, or just the idea of a rug in general in this room? I wasn't sure about a rug on top of carpet but thought it could be a good way to break up the space and add some colour. I am planning to return that rug on the weekend and continue my search! I agree I love the green outlook and it is really nice to lie on the couch and look out (while wondering how to set up the room!) :)...See MoreWhat do you think of my home makeover?
Comments (15)Shazia you're a brave woman indeed to invite "all opinions" and fortunate that houzzers tend to be helpful not hurtful. Your opinion is ultimately what counts of course. Whilst difficult to judge without seeing the room in it's entirety this is what I'd try if it were my home. I question the location of the dining area and wonder if you've tried or considered moving it nearer the kitchen? I'd move the elaborate mirror to end wall on it's own where the a/c - security box are (they may need to be moved across a bit, I've done it, it's easy), with the dining suite there. The mirror won't fight with the Chesterfields then and would work well with the dining suite. I'd move the dark corner bookcase next to the stairwell, it looks like it would fit and make the room less busy. Bring the wall unit up to it moving the TV unit down where I'm assuming the wall unit ended before. Then you could arrange your couches into an L with space enought to walk between window and couch facing the kitchen and space to walk behind the other couch facing the TV to walk in and out of the sliding door creating a cosy nook. The cow rug would work a treat. I'd place the Moroccan table with the Tiffany lamp in the corner void created where the couches meet. It would create defined areas whilst still looking open. That's my taste of course and know that my ideas usually takes hours, days, weeks of moving and shoving things around until it feels right. If it feels right it is right Shazia. Comments (10)The stained glass windows seem to be at odds with the exposed brick, but probably match the original part of the house. If the stained glass windows are giving privacy from an overlooking neighbour I would keep them, and work to make the brickwork more like the original part of the house, so it seems less incongruous. This could be done using a traditional wet plaster or solid plaster technique, which you would need to complete befor your gas insert fireplace is positioned. I would finish it of with a traditional timber fireplace surround and mantle piece, which would be the focal point of a more contemporary room, but link in with the original architecture.
