need help to design simple layout for 40 foot container home
Comments (6)Hi, we have actually built a luxury 4 bedroom container home from scratch. It had a master bedroom, walk in robe, ensuite, laundry, living area, study, bathroom, toilet, alfrsco etc and ended by being quite large. We bought existing containers and converted them. As a builder, we understood the challenges of getting it to comply, but as MB has said, the challenges were huge. The engineering reinforcement and cutting of corten steel with a plasma cutter was a whole new learning curve in practicality. The realities of dealing with condensation /insulation and wiring are another. My strong suggestion to you is to either go through a specialist container builder (there is one in Victoria from memory) or use another method. Here's a piccy of what we did.... Comments (61)Thank you Oklouise for looking into these again for me. We had a lengthy discussion with my artchitect during the week and we agreed that he would revisit the whole concept, with particular regard to how spaces are distributed across the split levels. This might change the floor plan entirely. He is coming up with a new proposal today. I will share that with you here for comparison and advise. Thanks again....See MoreHome Extension Design - Help please :-)
Comments (19)Thanks for all your responses. The garage as marked on the plan is incorrect - this is actually a carport and is allowable under Council setbacks. Standard side boundary setbacks requirement is 1.5m, but a relaxation can be sought on this. Thanks for your comments re going up Siriuskey - whether or not to go up is something we have grappled with. I agree that this would probably take best advantage of the block, but it is not how we want to live in this home. Thanks for your thoughts oklouise - there are several elements of your plan that are very appealing - the laundry and powder work really well and the adjustment to the kitchen to have a servery to the kitchen is great. Paul's thoughts about moving the entry to the side of the house with more direct access to the open plan living is are a bit of an eye opener. One of the advantages of this and more of a pavilion style extensions is that an external window could be retained to the proposed music room, allowing it to stay as a bedroom. If it was possible to keep 4 bedrooms in the existing house, the size of the extension could be reduced....See MoreHelp with a kitchen design for our new house
Comments (114)Ground floor we are thinking of going with this one. I am not worried about northern sun now, as with our landscape it is bit hard to try another shape and we feel like this layout of kitchen/dining/living gives us the most usable space. We might put a tall window above the kitchen bench instead of an overhead to get more light in. I have added a hall way table at the entrance, A bigger study/office, Linen/broom/storage space, laundry has external access. For the First floor we are leaning towards this one, which gives more space and big robes in bed2 and bed 3, also a WIR for his&her. 1800mm vanity, walkin shower and bathtub, a small balcony enough to put chairs and a small coffee table, we may make the balcony a little bigger as the master bedroom is now 4x4.7m. What we think is with this configuration 3/4 people can use the family bathroom area at the same time. I am not much worried about the bed orientation, this configuration work for us, anyone buying, its big bedrooms, they can put it anyway they like. Thanks to all specially to @oklouise and @differentways who went above and beyond to draw the designs for me, we wouldve put the toilet at the bath with window as differentways. suggested, but. then its too messy with robes and bedrooms get small., We dont want any robes sticking out, a wall to wall robe will give that luxury feel. We also like @dreamer ensuite design but again i think this one gives a different feel, something out of the box, what we usually see like in hotels. Also thanks to @macyjean & @Kate some of your advices were very valid and got us rethinking a lot of stuff. And thanks to all the others who spend there time looking at the design and reading the long messages and giving there much valuable opinions, every little suggestions are important. I know its not finished yet but we are almost there, if there is anything to improve or if i miss anything please let me know. We really value your thoughts and suggestions. We are very happy this turned out this way....See Moremldesign0401
