Yay or nay? Toilet showers!
Comments (49)Well here we are yet again! I've not changed my opinion. The toilet-loo-privy- whatever one wants to call it needs a room of its own. Makes no sense to me having a "privacy wall" behind which to hide the pedestall if it is placed in a shower or full bathroom...the locked bathroom door is all that's needed. Seems to me that the concept of a separate toilet room or "Powder Room" (Why that title is anyone's guess)...was a sensible and accepted concept of homes in the 50's. It wasn't in need of any "polite" title, it was simply referred to as "The Toilet"..meaning basically -".where to freshen up". My idea of a perfectly sensible toilet is a separate little room housing the pedestal (toilet bowl) and a little basin with running water. Optional- a paper hand towel dispenser or one of those blowers...or a small towel rack and/or a nook for toilet paper...mabye to accomodate wet wipes in the absence of a basin or even where there's a basin....a nice comfy little Toilet Room.....See MoreDouble entry bathroom dilemma!
Comments (8)if you think about the time taken to do the water damage with the existing layout you could simply repair, and retain the existing layout and have many more years of use....think about how much better the patching and waterproofing products are now (builders' bog and modern waterproofing can do wonders for holes in timber window sills etc) the bathroom is already quite special with dual access and the garden outlook.. dramatic changes would remove the best of what you already have and new owners may prefer other options... i suggest you repair and replace everything to restore the fresh look of the original bathroom and maybe add a curved rod with generous white shower curtains, plantation shutters and new coat of paint to revive the bathroom without making any dramatic changes or spending too much...See MoreBathroom plumbing dilemma
Comments (23)Unfortunately a cavity sliding door on the toilet won't work due to structural considerations. It would be a massive task to modify the existing wall to create a cavity. Anyway, I don't like them. Every house I've been in that had a cavity slider it sagged, and they are so hard to adjust when that happens. They are a great idea in theory, but I've not seen one work well in practice. I did consider a barn slider along the toilet side. Not sure what you mean by an 'inbuilt basin', Shirley. If you mean the type that sit over the toilet cistern, I looked at them and rejected because they are awkward to get at and use. In UK, they make units with an integrated basin next to the cistern and some are very stylish. Nothing like that available in Aus, sadly. I also wanted to ensure there was at least a small amount of cabinet space for toilet cleaner and cloth and spare toilet paper and a few personal conveniences. Where are you located, Julia Lesley? We are on the Sunshine Coast and finding it well nigh impossible to get building tradespeople to do anything at present. The renovator I mentioned above is booked up for 5 months!...See Moretoilet roll holder dilemma
Comments (4)Is there going to be a shower screen? Not ideal but maybe you could attach it to that? If you want a holder on the wall behind you want to be sure it will hold the roll in place as you pull, as I learned the hard way in a beautifully renovated hotel bathroom when the roll went for a roll over to the far side of the room. If the holder points straight outwards that's even trickier, unless you go old-school with some kind of mechanism that secures it. Or the upright one in Julie Herbert's pictures looks like it would be alright. Still unnecessarily awkward reaching so far behind though. As far as I'm concerned the bathroom is there for my convenience, I'm not there to make the bathroom look good....See Morecarthiefintexas
