What type of rug? And what colour?

I have a small living room that has 2 walls, large alfresco window and I'm looking for a rug to suit the attached furniture and to sit on carpet (carpet is attached and is a latte brown colour).

What colour rug? And what type of rug?

Colour for the room I'm hoping to buy nice artwork.

How about something in between a Persian rug (very busy) and something exotic - perhaps like this

Try a mid-century modern rug like Hemphill's Rex Ray Area Rug Collection or Jaipur Traverse Caracas. I looked up 'mid-century modern rug' and chanced upon these on Houzz. I like the muted colours which would soften the cream on brown. The mid-century motifs would highlight the mid-century chair. Good luck!

Thank you everyone! Between you all you have summed up my concerns (changing bulbs, enough detail already in the stairwell, honouring the old house) and my desires (a nice lantern pendant or period light, LEDs need less changing, overhead lighting. I like the idea of the wall lights but we have not wired for this. There is wiring for for stair lighting (phew, glad we got that right) and one down light in the middle of the void. We have reconsidered a pendant as the one down light will be harder to change but are worried about obscuring the windows. Perhaps one of the simple fine-framed lantern pendants or white vintage light, on chains will be easier to change as we can pull it across to the stair, or a pulley pendant like this I'll post some more photos of our reno once its further on.

Hi siriuskey So the large coir mat from Bunnings is much cheaper than the Chilewich. I'm confused now. Do you recommend the coir mat or the Chilewich? I'm not sure if I can even find a Chilewich in Adelaide to bring home for a look ....

That timber floor is beautiful, so a floor rug needs to compliment and highlight that What is the traffic flow like in that part of the room? It depends, do you want a small rug that just sits under a central table or a large area rug? If you're just wanting something small in the centre I would go for some thing pale and textured, sheepskin or long shag. If you want an area rug, then i like misshayley's idea.
