Comments (23)Well I think my husband mainly wants to hide the chocolate stash away from me as where I would use it to store vases and everything else that you usually keep in the top of the pantry(you only get out once or twice a year). He does have a point but I am worried about boxing ourselves in - no room for growth. He is definitely not itching for his next project (we have been working weekend, after weekend on this house - decking, paving, etc) I worry about the lack of storage. Mainly because I really just like to finish a room and move on. Because I use this space every day its annoying me with how uncompleted it feels to me. I do think it needs something to finish it off and look complete. But I'm glad you like it though Madeline :) I have been researching with what people have suggested and the main trouble I foresee having is actually getting the right product delivered and available. Most don't ship to where I am (I live in a small coastal city) and its about 5hrs drive from the only Ikea in the state or I will have to wait 8 weeks for delivery from over east. So I really have to plan it right. I am reading the reviews on open shelving... well lets just say that is interesting. Thanks again!...See MoreTimber or white shelves for my new kitchen?
Comments (14)I would have your bench top supplier cut a thin batten of timber in the same 40mm thickness, and fix this as a front to a white melamine shelf. For a couple of reasons. Melamine is easiest to keep clean, whereas a varnish or oiled timber will require constant maintenance and resealing if it is used often, it will discolour and even with the sealant it does not like moisture, being natural, all timbers expand and contract in temp changes. Melamine is stable, and won't be seen from the viewpoint, and the timber front will make it look more substantial. Secondly, this thickness will be necessary to avoid shelf deflection, where lengths over 900mm will commonly sag under weight. Reinforcing your shelf with timber battens will avoid this, and the timber edge strip again hides it. If all this seems a little too hard, just invest in solid timber shelves of around 40mm, but have the tops laminated....See MoreKitchen Reno
Comments (4)Symmetry is great but as commented above, function is more important in kitchen. We have symmetry around our freestanding cooker and again around the sink/window as these are the places the eye is drawn to (as Vy has said). Dishes from rinsing/stacking in sink will drip over floor if you have to turn around to place into dishwasher. Perhaps you could put both sink and dishwasher in the island bench so that the asymmetry is 'hidden' from direct view. We placed our microwave in the island bench to disguise it. Also consider location of storage of crockery and cutlery relative to the dishwasher for ease of unpacking. After years of cabinets, I love all the deep drawers we had included this time -much easier to see and grab what is needed.... Lastly, if partner wants open glass shelves then partner is agreeing to maintain/clean to a level considered acceptable by both of you and for the lifetime of the kitchen, right?!?...See MoreOn trend shelving in kitchen .... Comments (20)petapea Thank you so much for the comments and research... I have thought long and hard about this .. for days! You know what I agree with you.. Shelving without any bits and bobs on it, above a window looks great, but I have visited a few homes with shelving (without windows) that is actually lived in and not a display home and it does look busy, and cluttered. I have decided to go a polytec black wenge, full height cabinets to the ceiling, sophisticated , warm, and clean.
