What's the most annoying home building/design jargon?
Comments (62)As an architect, I have a list of words saved on my desktop that I am conscious can sound confusing to the client! One day I hope to write a little archi-dictionary to help clients work out what we mean when we use so many of the words that seem natural to us! 'Form', 'honest materials', 'warmth', 'documentation', 'draft', 'sketch plan', 'detail', 'mass', 'spine', 'circulation', 'water harvesting', 'floating', 'dynamic', 'heavy', 'celebrate'... etc....See MoreRenovating ex housing commission house. Comments (104)Hello Fianou, Congratulations on your charming home. I think it has so much potential. I love the idea of teal, it is fresh and welcoming. I was thinking to give the home some street appeal and to also make it extremely functional. I would see if you could afford to put a wonderful wooden deck out the front, and then I would have window shutters painted teal placed on either side of the windows to give it street appeal, if you could afford to paint the brick I would paint it in a happier white tone with the blue accessory trim on the shutters on each window and also on the roof trim to tie it all in. On the deck I would have flower boxes painted in the same teal colour or whatever colour you choose to link in the whole story. I can see it can be so sweet and charming and a real place to call home. The timber fence at the side would also link in with the decking at the front. Good luck and congratulations on buying your own home ! Woo hoo !...See MoreWorst share house experience you've had?
Comments (15)Loving these hilarious stories ... makes mine seem tame. My flatmate and I had a spare room and kindly offered it to a friend. She moved in and all was going quite well (except the cartoons every morning, the late night fry ups and the various articles of clothing left lying ALL over the house). One evening when 'friend' was out, we two had a few friends over for drinks and a movie. Everyone was being polite and trying not to mention the smell that became increasingly offensive as the night wore on. Half way through the movie it was no longer tolerable ... "What the hell is that smell .. sorry girls, but I think you have a dead animal in here somewhere". So six of us went searching for about half an hour ... it was a pair of 'friends' shoes left pushed under the couch. The smell, up close, was worse than BAD ... no words! I decided to just throw the shoes into 'friends' bedroom but .. when I opened the bedroom door .. the full force of her many pairs of smelly shoes hit me and I almost passed out. The smell lingered in the living room for days later. We confronted 'friend' about the shoe problem and from that point her shoes had to be stored outside on the veranda, away from all doors or windows so the smell could never be allowed to permiate the indoors again. 'Friends' response was "how dare you open my bedroom door". All this led to us lying ... told her the lease was up, planned moving day, she moved, we stayed, and for the remainder of the lease we lied about where we lived. All that deceipt over smelly shoes....See MoreHome renovation brainstorm!
Comments (20)The extra info and the pictures have gotten me even more confused -- normally I can work out why things are done as they are , but this almost does my head in . For example , if it was designed and built as a brothel , the master almost looks like it would have been a strip club with a bar , the study an entry foyer , and maybe a door to seperate the 'strip' side from the 'brothel' side , but then you wouldn't have had the master ensuite where it is -- it would have been more likely a changing room , and the bathroom would have been where the WIR is . I don't want to sound like I spend too much time studying brothels haha , but I would also imagine they are generally 'warmer' with wallpapered walls and less open spaces where clients could bump into others . So many possibilities , and I guess a reasonably long list to work through , but here's what I'd suggest to start -- -- what do you WANT upstairs ? For example , are the views good -- is it worth considering it as a main kitchen / dining / lounge / Family rooms , with a bathroom ? A bit unconventional , but if the views are there , why not ? -- if upstairs is 'the kids bedrooms' , do you keep a kitchen there , or go rumpus or study or try for a bit of them all ? -- would it work better moving Master and say a guest bedroom up there , then maybe split the downstairs Master and Bed 2 and that sliding door to nowhere , into 3 'kids' bedrooms ? -- the existing dining and lounge are effectively in the middle of our downstairs with very few windows -- generally that is better suited to bedrooms , so do you swap rooms ( and then try and work out how to make the kitchen relevant ? ) , or go for longer rooms with windows , or leave as it is . Not easy ....See Moretelperien
