Need help renovating my 13 year old daughters bedroom

she has a simple square 12' x 12' (3.6m x 3.6m) bedroom with one wall being built in wardrobes with standard louvred hinged doors. The entry door to the bedroom opens next to the built in wardrobe with a large 7' (2.1m) wide window opposite the wardrobe. ceilings and walls are standard plasterboard and we are kinda stuck with the beige carpet. I'm looking for ideas on wall paint colours and perhaps feature wall paper or mural on one wall ... she's 13 now and a real artist (drawings) and a very gentle soul ... not a girly girl into shoes and makeup but a down to earth soul who was born premature so has always been the shortest in her classes at school. Short on stature but big on hugs and love.
Any ideas ... inspiration ... photos ... ?

Why not use some of her art work on the walls, in different size and style frames (natural, black, white & silver) - you can pick up some cheap frames in the op shop and the bargain stores - just buy some spray paint, and have fun - let your artist help....... you can even photograph some of her art work and have it blown up to poster size - the brighter the better. I'd suggest painting the walls white, with maybe a feature wall a timber bed head - one with a book shelf would be great - a double of course - the room is big enough. A rug to anchor the bed and some funky cushions. An Eames DSW white retro chair and a small white desk with some floating white shelves for odds and ends.... I'd probably get a white roller blind for the window, and paint the door, wardrobe doors and skirtings white, and a lovely large retro style light fitting in the middle of the room, or a hanging pendant next to the bed. A small bedside table - try Ikea - they have a great range, and not too expensive, you may even be able to get a great bedhead there - she sounds a very practical girl, so no frills. You want a young, fresh, modern look. Place the artwork randomly, in groups, on the walls - hang paper cut outs on the walls with blue tack, to see the effect, before you put up the art - Your artist could help with that too. What's her favourite colour??? Does she have any hobbies?? We need photos and more info....

I think the advice about not making it a surprise is sound - but perhaps you could put some ideas together (even on Pinterest or as actual 'vision boards') so you have a starting point (even if she totally rejects everything - at least you know what she doesn't want!). Has she finished school? If she is starting Year 12 next year, or university studies, the desk and chair don't really look adequate for long hours. Consider an ergonomic office chair from Officeworks and possibly some floating shelves attached to the wall, strong enough for textbooks, folders and so on - even to take a small computer printer? Think about a powerboard (with safety switch) to go into the electrical point where the lamp currently plugs in - for the lamp, a computer, a printer, and any other electrical gizmos she has. If she's not studying, how about a large wall mirror for over the desk (rather than on it) and making a lovely dressing table space? (I know when I was 17, trying to dry my hair and experiment with new makeup looks in the family bathroom was not easy!). Good luck with it all, and I hope she (one day!) appreciates what a considerate mum she has!

Oh dear, you'd better not nag him, I am saving that for his graduation ;) Apparently it is a sticker on the till and they are not concerned, advertising is so controversial! Hi Houzzers You have all been so kind with your design advice, and helped us come up with this design. I think we are nearly there, and are pretty happy with the result...we still ended up with the door into bedroom from hall....but think it will be ok.....may swing the door the other way...will put doors on bathroom and sitting(not shown) I like the 2 dressing areas we have created either side of our wardrobes, and the seperate toilet. Very happy for any other input on this design before we send it off to the builder!

Hi Steve, I liked your post so thought I'd just throw some ideas your way. :)

I'd go for a neutral tone and strength of her favourite colour eg. if her favourite colour is green then this room would be a good colour to paint as it can easily be restyled as she grows etc :) It could also compliment the carpet.

Another colour which I love is Duck white by dulux / maybe quarter strength for that size room?

Also for artwork /murial - How about you both go garage sale shopping/opshops and pick up cheap frames to put on the walls - no need for glass even.. and she can change the artworks around like her own little gallery space :)

Hi again Steve,
I forgot to say that I would paint a feature wall rather than paper - easier to change as she grows and her taste changes....
I'd go for a lime green, yellow or aqua.... But she has to decide that. She may prefer pink.....
And, do we have room for a bean bag in the corner, something bright to compliment the feature wall. Maybe a solid colour for the bedding with the bright cushions...
You might be able to find an old bookcase, that you could also paint in the feature wall colour.
Then lots of bright accessories - bargain shops, K-Mart and Target have lots of fun inexpensive bits and bobs. When our daughter moved into a double bed - about the same age, we kept her single mattress and put it under her double as a spare bed for friends. We were lucky enough to have had a trundle base to slide in and out on. Just thought I'd mention it, as it was so handy. Cheers and, once again, good luck.
