I think 4m x 3m is a pretty good size for a living area. Based on the plans, you have a nice, open, flowing and balanced space which may be compromised by including a butlers pantry which presumably would form a "block" between the kitchen and living area. I guess it boils down to what is most important to you and what you would get the most use out of. It may also depend upon your idea of "essentials" for a butlers pantry. It would need to be pretty big if you wanted to include a second sink, plenty of shelving, a food preparation area, all your small kitchen appliances, a wine fridge and possibly even your dishwasher and main fridge. I also can't tell from the plans whether you have a second living area. If so, that may be another reason to sacrifice room from this living area, particularly if this living area is only intended to include a single sectional sofa and TV. Personally, I wouldn't worry about a butlers pantry because it's not something I would ever really use for its intended purpose. When I entertain, I like to be able to see and talk to the guests as I prepare the food, as I rinse dishes to go into the dishwasher, etc.

Thanks for your thoughts fiona_ab & ccwhatmough I'm thinking the same thing as far as wooden slats being a great fit for the room, there's a real fine line between creating an open space, allowing light in and keeping a spacious feel to the room. Good point about the reflection in the wardrobe mirrors. There is no specific reason for there to be a 'movable' wall expect to give the option for the room to feel more spacious. At the moment I am thinking about dark wood shutter / louvres. Either one or two panels (if 2 then the second would slide back). I found an example on Pinterest I really like - and have photoshopped it as best I can into the space to see what it would look like - and I think it could really work. The other option is to have the wood white - but I think the dark wood would compliment the other furniture / wood in the apartment. Appreciate any thoughts!

Hi Kelly You have lovely colours and finishes in your home, makes for a great starting point. If your dining table fits in the lounge room with plenty of room then it might be an option. You could consider then making the front room a nice sitting area. If you are thinking of updating your main sofa to a corner type then maybe go for single chairs in the front room which you can anchor with a rug and round coffee table. See images below. Then to create a more formal entry way, separate the area with a bench seat that can (so it would sit opposite your built in at front door) then lay a hall runner between the two. A plant next to the bench would help screen between also. You could then replace the photograph with a mirror (possibly round to contrast with cabinets) and add catch all bowl for keys, sunnies, etc...
