I actually really like the festoon lights! Fairy lights remind me too much of Christmas to have as an all year round feature.

We are renovating the interior of our common property apartment building. There is not a great deal of natural light, so we are painting the walls Casper White. We need some contemporary lighting that will modernise the building. The lights are on all day and night, so LED is probably preferred? If you are in New Zealand, I have often found great lights (and a big range) at Lighting Plus. The second look like they are designed for stairwells so I'd be a bit wary about using them up higher as the light might be a bit "spotlight" and not diffuse enough. I think both styles work with your house design
