Wooden kitchen island bench top with a sink?

I love the look of wood and was planning to have a reclaimed wooden island bench top, however, have realised I now need to have a sink in the island. How practical is wood in this circumstance and is there a certain type of wood or finish I should be looking at? I like the clean look of under mounted sinks but again, am concerned this may not be practical. Would love to hear from anyone who has had experience either positive or negative. Thanks!

I say don't. My friends looks bad after two months. Stained with white circles from water damage. However , hers doesn't look sealed or oiled well enough. It's quite raw looking. Some woods must be more suited then others. If you don't have children and don't leave anything drying or wet on your benchtops it would be ok.

I've had this before with not too many issues. The big thing is to choose your wood wisely and absolutely make sure it is properly sealed. You can't put hot things on it though. Good luck!

You are required a set down area of a minimum of 200mm either side of a cook top (I'd recommend more though as I don't like to feel like my pots are hanging over the edge of the bench). Your 3m width will leave enough for a small sink (400mm width?) so a quick calculation 600mm settle down + 900mm cooktop + 400mm sink = 1.9m... plenty leftover space in the 3m Good luck! Sophie

Have you been to visit some kitchen showrooms? You can customise the photo search here on Houzz quite a bit. For example, you can simply select [dark wood[(https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/kitchen-design-ideas-with-dark-wood-cabinets-phbr1-bp~t_10444~a_17-103) cabinet finish in the filter options. Then add more filters like floor colour, kitchen layout, cabinet style, wall colour etc if you wish. Leave the benchtop and splashback options open and see what results you get. You can then save any photos that appeal to your ideabook.

The darker the bench colour, the more marks it will show. We have a stone benchtop - a white with small flecks of grey and beige through it - easy to maintain.
