Fire Pit seating

Hi we're building a fire pit and seating that will look similar to this first picture when completed (although on a smaller scale). I'm now thinking we need backing to the seating to create a more comfortable feel and was wondering if anyone had ideas on how we can add a timber back support. I saw this second photo but not sure how we could add this to a brick seat.

Looks great without the backing. But you're right that it will make it more usable for longer periods of time. I think you or a carpenter would need to create a wooden frame which could be bolted into the brickwork. Someone may have a better/easier idea.

I'd consider wider block of wood (sleeper for rustic or smooth sleeper for contemporary) as an upright at various positions - rather than a solid backing (uneven number) then add cushions of all sizes - that way you can arrange them however you like and change the tone for the season. Still having places to lean but not blocking the whole back of the seating.

OR like the image below with bright cushions, have a cushion with an attached roll at the back - If the seating area you've built is deep. Rgds Jac

Id have Raised planter boxes put in around the outside of our yard so my mother in-law doesn't have to spend hours on the ground with a bad back to do the gardening!..

A couple thoughts. a) This appears to have been placed at the center of the back of the yard, for something that is not a central activity. Consider moving it to a less dominant location, and perhaps filter the view of it from the house with some small trees or multistem shrubs like crape myrtle or lilac, that will also provide a pleasant fragrance. b) This design is like a council fire of the boy scouts, perhaps for telling ghost stories or instructions for the days to follow. You want cozy, cuddle by the fire, arm around your neighbor environment. A place for a quiet conversation, like with corner seating. Or with loud, slap on the back joking around, therefore closeness. A useful space, with or without the fire. Great place to sit with the dog and read that mystery you have been putting off. I think the gravel floor might be the most suitable to all activities, even for the kids parking their bikes there while they toss a ball around. You might want to place a horse shoe court next to it, so they could use the same benches from the other side to watch the contest or the fire - might need a refrigerator handy for the beer. Analyse first, then plan. Enjoy!

hi Neryl and others, I love fire pits and we have a special area in the yard with stone seating around it. we love it and it is great for the kids and when they have friends over. we often burn these funny hexagonal 'logs' which are made from recycled something (I cant remember whether its paper or woodchips). we got them from Bunnings but I can't find them on bunnings website right now. they are called ecologs or something like that. they are slow burning and good. we have the chappala sun god fire pit from bunnings and it has been good. the metal parts do rust tho. the good thing about it is the screen lid which I feel is a bit safer. but the lid does get hot so you need an oven mitt or similar to lift it to roast marshmallows or add more wood or anything. downside is it has no drainage hole so fills with rainwater. good luck
