Newly purchased 1950's home, I need some landscaping & exterior ideas
Comments (11)I completely love the twirly bits, and the window trim. It's unique, special and shows the family within has a sort of fun spirit. If you would be more comfortable with a cottage that looks more "regular", then take it off. But please don't! For some color and inspiration, google French provencal fabric images. I can completely see a little black metal bistro table and wood slat back chairs on your porch with a cloth of one of those fabrics. I would paint it a light dusky blue, with white trim and mid-charcoal accents around the windows and the corner pieces on the front porch. Although the yellow with the blue would be quite right too! The front walk looks to be in good condition. You can do a stone overlay on that, letting a small portion of the stones hang over the straight edge, to give it a little more rustic look. It looks like you have a good collection of Queen of the Nile lilies (guessing here). Were they blue on blooming? You can create some slightly larger and curving beds in the front, and transplant some within it. I would add lavender and rosemary in a mix with those. For some grey and texture, put some lambs ears (a perennial) along the outside edge. Check your local growing zone to see what will thrive in your area! Lucky you. What a find!...See MoreBland and monochromatic - landscape ideas needed
Comments (13)You have a great home. Don't paint the fence - natural is always best with this style of home. And once you paint, you have ongoing maintenance. Look at the big trees on the LHS of the photo. These trees are above the height of your home and are helping to frame your home. I would suggest using a tall tree on the RHS behind the fence and if you have room in your rear yard, tall trees here. Then your home will be fully 'framed' from the road. Many will cringe at the suggestion of tall trees. People need to get over this attitude - we need more trees in our gardens and tall trees help with creating microclimates and assisting the hydrological cycle. People also whinge about leaves in the gutters. You will get these from the neighboring trees anyway. Cleaning gutters is part of home maintenance and shouldn't discourage people from growing trees. And there are now numerous gutter protectors that modern homes now have in place. Annuals in pots wont work if its too shady. You could use big pots - and they need to be big due to the scale of your home, and plant strappy plants like Liriope in them. There is a great variety called Emerald Cascade that you could consider. I would use dark grey pots as they are untrendy and will last indefinitely. Another great pot plant is Pittosporum tobira 'Miss Muffet'. Both would look excellent in the big grey pots....See MoreNeed Symmetrical Landscaping Suggestions/Ideas/Advice Please!
Comments (7)Hi...When mine was at the planning stage , I found the best way was to discreetly take photos of gardens I liked in the area..I like neat symmetry too and based my garden around hedges, paths and groundcover with some feature magnolias and 2 rectangles of lawn and it is easy to take care of and matured reasonably quickly. I also have some roses but I would probably omit them if I did it again. Garden centres are good for free local advice too. Hope that helps....See Moresimple landscaping ideas needed
Comments (4)My money would go on putting in some gate and fence either side of front of house to secure yard, then spend rest of your limited budget at front. Path to door also essential for young family plus you don’t want dirt being traipsed in during inspections. Look at what is being done in the area, kerb appeal very important....See Moretanjimh
