Starching Fabric to Walls

It is no secret that most American homes and Australian homes are built very differently. Having lived in both countries and following American design blogs, I am tempted to try starching fabric to walls in my Australian home rental as an alternative to removable wallpaper. Would this work in a double-brick home with plaster? I have previously tried washi tape as a wall decoration and low and behold the plaster flaked off where the tape was.

Non-permanent solutions are key to me. However, I don't see much of a difference between washi tape and removable wall paper. Would the initial wetness of the starch flake the plaster?

Thanks for any helpful tips/ideas!
