My parents' old house had a wonderful oak front staircase that my six siblings and I used to race up and down, taking them two or three at a time, with only a casual hold on the railing. I don't know how we managed to never slip or fall. Now, the timber backstairs were steep, and had narrow treads and were poorly lit. We NEVER ran up or down them, but held tightly to the railing and hoped to heck we managed to stay upright. As an adult, my previous home had carpeted stairs, which I slipped on (wearing socks) and fell down twice, though thankfully I was closer to the bottom than the top. My current home has timber stairs with three narrow stainless steel runners stood on edge and inset horizontally across the front of each tread (this is supposed to help reduce risk of slips). I doubt I will get over the anxiety of taking another tumble, so I never go down them wearing socks, and if barefoot, I hold onto the railing for dear life and take it nice and slow. So far so good.

I'll have the same dilemma when I eventually move. The first thing that I will be doing is buying some large, neutral coloured rugs, probably jute or sisal (or similar), to help juxtapose the light timber floors with the dark timber furniture. I think having a "break" between the two timber styles/colours is a good idea. I'll personally be aiming for some kind of combined Japanese and Scandinavian interior design. Oooooh lovely to see such great work in my neck of the woods. Pity City of Bayswater doesn't do heritage awards you guys deserve one.

We're currently building and have out down blackbutt. It's only been laid, still to be sanded and top coated. We plan to just finish with a satin waxy product. I'd have to ask hubby what exactly it is. But we don't intend to stain. We've seen this finish on 2 recent builds and it looks fab. A small pic of ours. I can take a larger one of the entire open plan room if you wish. This was just one I had on the iPad :) We love the blackbutt. We originally chose as it was cheaper than spotted gum. Ours is standard grade so has more knots, etc than the higher grade. I actually prefer the feature of the standard grade. We have kids and a dog so hopefully will cope ok.
