Top of rail shower above height of shower screen? Will it look odd?
Comments (16)I am struggling to find any pictures of where someone has the shower fittings higher than their shower screen to see how odd it actually would look like. One of my 101 learnings about getting the wrong tradesperson to "project manage" my bathroom renovation (until he went MIA), was not voicing louder to the plumber's assistant who actually did the shower connections, that what the "project manager" had suggested for heights of shower connections was way too high. I had actually double-checked it on the previous weekend with a friend and we both thought that it needed to be lowered by 100-150 mm, but when I said this to the "project manager" he ignored me as did the plumber assistant who made the connections....I know how a handheld shower only (which is all I wanted) fitting that is at 2070mm in one bathroom and 2020mm in the other bathroom. As there is no shower rail (because I wanted things to look simple), I get my daily stretches just to reach the handheld shower.....I am happy with the progress of my bathroom, except for all of the stuffups caused by this particular "tradesperson/project manager". We live and learn....I can't do anything about what has happened, but can only minimise the impact where possible and learn from all the things that went wrong, if there is ever a next time. I should make a list of the learnings once bathroom is finished....See MoreShould we put a skylight over our shower?
Comments (35)We installed a skylight over shower (velux fixed) in a tiny ensuite and I would highly recommend. It looked absolutely amazing and was heavenly to shower under the sky. We only had the house for a year and sold it (about to install another skylight over shower in our new house), so I can't comment on the long term, but no mould problems or condensation drips. I think if anything the sunlight was actually helpful to dry up moisture. We live in Tasmania so I'd doubt condensation dripping would be a problem elsewhere. We had a fan installed not in the cavity with the skylight but just on the ceiling next to it. In the second bathroom we put in a skylight over bath and put an extractor in the skylight cavity as the ceiling was higher. Could not feel a draught- so I think the question of where to put fan really depends on ceiling height. Do the skylight over shower!! You will not regret it. It really takes your bathroom to another level and there are really no maintenance problems if installed properly with custom flashings. I found velux quite repellent of dirt etc, we did not need to clean after a year (one flat roof skylight, one very large sloped) and I have seen velux skylights looking great with no cleaning for 7 years plus....See MoreShower recess – to the ceiling or not?
Comments (23)I don't think there is too much wasted space here. As you say, if you are trying to avoid having glass in the shower (which is always my aim too), and have privacy for the toilet, and a "spaciousness" for the flow-through in front of the vanity, plus access to the outside, the extra space you are using is so that you can achieve the aims that you want for your bathroom. There could be more compact designs that could be used if you didn't want all of those things, but sometimes the extra space is necessary. If you made the external door slightly narrower you could shave some off the walkthrough area in front of the vanity, but you might end up feeling cramped. If you can afford the extra space within your budget and this gives you a pleasant feeling every day when you use your ensuite, it's not really "wasted". I'm having similar dilemmas with my ensuite design right now, so I understand how hard is is too balance all the factors. Having said all that, if Daniel has an alternative that meets all the criteria but would be more efficient, I'd like to see it too, as it might help me with my design....See MoreHow do we heat and light a bathroom with three-metre ceilings?
Comments (23)We too live in a cold winter climate with our bathrooms all on the southern side and faced similar issues as you do. One smaller bathroom does not have a window so we put in a Velux skylight which provides amazing natural light through the day. This may not be to your liking, especially if you have a period home. We also use heated towel rails and under tile heating (just enough to take the chill off and stop mould) in winter. Although we have a light in the shower recess, a bonus is the large fixed shower head with inbuilt LED, which at night gives the feeling of showering under moonlight. We chose light colours and mirrored recessed cabinets to reflect as much natural light as possible....See MoreChris Dimopoulos
