I NEED HELP WITH ROUGH THICK UNEVEN BRICK WALLS
Comments (24)Hi dinkidi4, I'm dealing with the same thing right now. I did paint some of the walls white, which have been good for the time I've been here before doing the 'real' job, however, I don't want this really textured look from the bricks as there are too many walls. I'm about to try Dulux Acra tex on a wall to see if it gives a smoother bagged finish. So still showing the brick lines but not so rough. I'll show photos of the original bricks. Dark, very textured with lots of holes and missing bits of brick as well as deep grout grooves. Such a hard decision - cost and I don't want to make it a flat boring plasterboard house. I have extremely high cathedral ceilings so not a cheap job to plaster either. Excuse the white box - I was playing with it to look at removing arches. Any thing else you've found out since would be a great help...See MoreHelp needed with wall untit /bookcase &cupboards
Comments (6)Hi Katrina, I really love the horizontal wood panelling I think it's a great feature and from the look of it dark beams with upstairs floor timber on show. If this was my room I would likely make a feature of the wall panels and work around that. I find that because of all the dark, heavy timber the panelling is getting a bit lost (I lived in a house like this in Eltham many years ago and at the time loved it...but it's a bit dated these days) As I can't make out the layout of the room my suggestions are based solely on the picture you have provided. My first suggestion is to sand the beams back to their natural wood because I feel that the darkness of the beams is competing too heavily with the timber of the rest of the room. I'm thinking something like this: https://au.pinterest.com/pin/520588038153372539/ I would then find a cabinet maker to change the cd shelves and open shelves underneath to match the cupboards already in place and put in a continuous benchtop along the top of the cupboards. I would then extend the top shelf to match the other two long shelves and replace the baseboard so it is continuous. I would then ask the cabinetmaker to make more streamlined cupboard doors as I find the vertical lines in the current doors detract from the wall panelling. https://au.pinterest.com/pin/353814114454459992/ or if your cabinetmaker has some clever friends maybe something like this: https://au.pinterest.com/pin/518265869604062708/ I would also remove the light fitting poking out of the left of the picture. I don't know what colour carpet you intend to have laid so it is difficult to suggest a colour palette however I am a huge fan of charcoal and timber: https://au.pinterest.com/pin/406168460122166906/ I would paint the back wall only in charcoal much like the colour above to give a sense of depth. All books would be on the shelves. I'm sorry to say that the ducks would sadly have to be ditched. The bench would be used to hold that gorgeous clock and some of those special pictures that you have on show. Good luck, I hope I have been helpful :D...See MoreBoring kitchen shelves! Help
Comments (15)Stacked/layered frames.. I really like this! Today I had a play and moved a few items around.. I think the area on the top shelf does need some frames or a few larger pieces as the smaller items I think look lost all the way up there? .. it’s a spacious area! I took a pano shot to show how little the kitchen items look with everything else going on in the house! Also a picture showing the wall joining the kitchen.. Is there such thing as too much art and family pictures? what do you think about larger frames on the top shelf? Or hung frames on the wall above it?...See MoreBuilt in TV unit & shelving advice
Comments (7)What do you like about the second picture? I like both pictures. But the first one gives you a sense of the layout of the whole wall whereas the second one does not, it doesn't even show the whole tv. I'm no expert but looking at the first picture even though there are different elements in it the sides line up. reading down the wall, there's a wide shelf, another wide shelf, a narrow shelf and the tv side by side, and a wide drawer unit. On one side is a vertical unit. It has variation and it's not symmetrical yet somehow it looks, what would you call it, ordered? Taking a guess, the second one might be symmetrical, which is simpler and works well. I thought of something else. If you want to put up floating shelves and definitely if you want to put anything with weight on them, you need to attach them to the studs in the walls, so you need to find where those are before you can make any decisions. Same for floating cabinetry....See MoreUser
