Timber versus aluminium doors & windows

My husband & I are about to embark on some renos to extend our living space. We plan to "build-in" in the alcove shown in the pic and create an open dining/living/kitchen space. The three windows in the foreground are going to be removed & a wall constructed, while the windows in the background and remaining internal windows/doors that form the alcove will be removed to open the space up (the kitchen is to the right and currently faces the alcove). We have found that new windows and doors are very expensive and we are tossing up repurposing two of our wood-framed windows and buying a new wood-framed slider, which will be positioned about where the pizza oven is OR buying all new double-glazed aluminium framed windows & a large sliding door (we've been quoted $9,500 for this!) and retaining wood framed windows through the rest of the house. What's the best option aesthetically & energy efficiency-wise? If we go timber, we are limited to a smaller sliding door because our existing windows are quite large. New aluminium windows would give us the option of a slider that opens about 3m. We're also building a new large alfresco area that you step out into from the slider. Any advice would be much appreciated. It's a big spend and we want to know it's worth it...
