Appliances - white or stainless steel?

i'm told white appliances are making a comeback but most of the kitchen photos I've viewed have stainless steel. I suspect the majority of people think steel is more desirable and upmarket but I would like to know if the Houzz community agrees. Do white appliances cheapen the look of a kitchen?

Hi I am not so much into the stainless steel appliances anymore. I have a smeg 90 cm free standing stove that was in the house when we purchased, it is really hard to keep it looking nice. We had to buy new fridges when we moved in and I bought white ones as a conscious decision as we had a stainless steel one (that did not fit into recess) I am very happy with the choice. If my budget was limitless I would take out the smeg and put in a new coloured one, not necessarily white. The dishwasher is also st/st and is really scratched where someone tried to wash off safety/water/energy labels.. It appears to be the latest model so pretty new, but when it dies I will put in a white one. Good luck...choosing is hard so go with what you like not what you think will meet others approval..cheers

I went looking at appliances today and I'm really taken by the Westinghouse white glass double oven and white glass gas cooktop. Sharp also do a white glass fridge and I'm thinking I might go down that route. I refuse to pay Smeg prices because I think the most expensive component is the little Smeg word written on the appliance. I nearly bought a Smeg microwave recently until I checked reviews and found it was rate 1/5 stars.

So true Interior blank. I don't know why white needs to equate to cheap looking in Australia. I drool in envy at some of the stoves in the US. Beautiful styling, retro looking, they have it all. You know what I'd like is for someone to be able to say exactly what needs to be done to convert their appliances to our electricity, or plumbing.

Go for it. You will be cross every day if you don't (I didn't want the recon stone stuff in my last kitchen...got pressured into it...hated it EVERY DAY!!). Current one is going to be stainless...absolutely!

Our son polished our stainless steel sink and appliances and even an outside water feature with a s/s polish and an electric buffer with a soft pad, came up beautuful, removed all scratces and gave a high shine, done 2 years ago and still looks great.

Oh no - does the black bother you? I basically just need induction and hopefully something that's reliable. It's on sale at the moment and does seem to have a lot of great features for the price but not knowing much about the brand I'm nervous about the quality and having issues with repairs. I do like the idea of the whole bench being white though as the cooktop would be the only black and I'm not sure if I'll regret it if I don't try it. So hard to decide! (First world problems!)

Portpiro, my oven came with the house. I must say I do like the way it cooks, but steel is just too hard to keep looking non smudged etc. in my last house I had a Bosch wall oven - that was the best oven I ever owned and if I ever replace the current smeg I would go back to a Bosch. We have white Westinghouse fridge freezer, no complaints good fridge that suits our kitchen and our needs, our stainless steel which I gave to my parents when we moved was also Westinghouse .. I am pretty sure they are Australian as well...so that is a bonus

Ps good luck with your continued research .. I am unsure what the white glass appliances are, but they sound good. Back to colour v ss..thinking back my Bosch was way easier to keep clean .. It was a brushed steel look it had telescopic shelves ..it is the only thing I miss about my last house.

ive seen stainless steel appliances look really smudged. I think stainless steel apliances highly overrated. DAre to be different and go white or even colored. Love those smeg colored appliances

White is timeless and can blend into a light coloured kitchen very well.......I agree with the comments on s/s smudges, no probs with white :)

We are seriously considering white appliances this time around after noting that there seem to more high end appliances now available. Ikea have white pyrolytic ovens and matching microwaves and cooktops and recently saw a smart white Miele in a Harvey Norman showroom.

I was thinking the same as I have a kitchen with some basic remodelling needed to be done and the current white oven is Westinghouse and I dont mind it but thought if I have to remodel then maybe I should put in st/st to improve value but I see just as many white these days and think I will keep it white. I will be replacing the dishwasher too so will probably go white with that as well.

Definitely white. Much easier to maintain, and if you have white cabinets, the appliances blend in.
