How to improve this facade?
This is the front of my house and it needs some art deco advice. A bit more information: this is located in a battle axe and is in the rear of the property. No one sees the façade except us or some occasional guests. What should I do to make it look nice and welcoming. Funny, that many pizza deliveries have come to my doorstep, whereas they were intended for the property in front. Some also thought that my house is the garage of the front property. I can't complain, I live in an excellent neighbourhood and surrounded by good neighbours. I just want some great ideas before I start any projects.

Comments (39)Keep the brick, please don't paint or render. Both eat into your budget (rendering in particular is not cheap), and will mean more ongoing upkeep (render still needs to be painted on a regular basis and with a two-storey house, that is a lot more work). Our house is rendered and we would never have it again. Whenever the house moves, the render doesn't, so is prone to cracking or, over time, pieces even falling off. Even subtle movement can cause hairline cracks, which means regular patching and painting. Quite frankly, most people render an older house to make it look modern, but when rendering becomes passe (which I think is already starting to happen), then the house will look dated again (and render is almost impossible to remove once its on). Also, if you're in an area prone to termites, termites can get in between the render and the brickwork and you won't see the telltale signs of "mud" at the access points to let you know they're there. Comments (30)ensimpson, Please do not render that brick. It is quite a nice brick and render can look very cheap and often done poorly cracks and looks even worse. If you don't like the dutch cables, you can go about removing them. These are not primary roof structure typically, but there will be a little work in making good the roof where they were. Alternatively, give these gables a function, place a fixed louvre, like you have shown in the attached image and allow the roof to vent through them. This will also impact the comfort of the home as there will be less heat buildup in the roof cavity. I agree with the comment above, the driveway is very prominent. This is partly the perspective of this image, but you could consider options for the driveway paving. I do not think painting grey is a good one. Repaving with a natural grey material could be as there would be more life and texture to it, but it is an expensive one....See MoreDesign help for facade
Comments (7)Its a bit hard to imagine something that is drawn in 2D , but I don't think it is too out of proportion . My main thought is that the roofline looks overly 'busy' and tall , for what is a fairly standard conventional rectangular design -- maybe only 2 peaks instead of the 3 , and/or longer and lower roof centrelines -- compare the taller ones with the garage . A couple of detail suggestions -- maybe a larger , wider entrance door and/or feature lights either side will add some interest , likewise a different material ( such as timber or brick or stone ) in that area will add to it . A 'go-to' of mine too would be , instead of render on the facade , having a split stone covering ( schist or similar ) is more expensive but way better looking IMO ....See MoreSuggestions to improve this facade
Comments (29)The larger window and taller garage opening both look good , and give a better balance IMO . The left side column didn't help , except arguably balanced the look , but you already know my views haha -- the distance between that right hand column and the wall looks fairly tight to me -- personally , I'd want at least a metre between the inside of the column and the wall , preferably 1.2 metres . Just one other suggestion -- I'd look at extending the small veranda part over the entrance door , and the 2 columns there , maybe 40-50cm forward , and add a bit of interest ? It would be relatively cheap to do , as the shape is already there , just add 1 more small truss and a bit more colourbond , and it breaks the roof line but also that front vista ? 8 years agoI think that the right hand side of the house from the entry seems cut off or missing something. If you could fill this void with a horizontal structure and add those agave in 3 matching large pots for a start.
Another idea with gates & a simple pergola ( I couldn't find your colours )...
