I'm not a glazier but I believe you can. You need special toughened glass and there will also be clearance distances that you will need to take into account, eg distance from glass to flame. Some more information can be found at; http://www.build.com.au/splashback-regulations

Eek - I don't think that's very common. Is there a reason you would like it to open?

I hate my glass splash back window from 5pm till around 7pm. When that suns beams through you can clearly see just how shit of a job you’ve done cleaning it. Without the sun beaming on it, the window looks crystal clear. But once the sun hits it forget it, the glass looks all smudgy and streaky! The only way to keep it clean is to use hot soapy water and a sponge. Then rinsing off the hot soapy water with clean water. Then use a towel to dry it down. Lots of towels are required as it makes a bloody mess. Then repeat the same process on the outside. So if I had to choice between a glass window or normal glass splashback no way I would choice the window. I hate it! I hate all windows once the sun hits them they look terrible if not cleaned throughly with soapy water. Ive tried using newspaper, vinegar etc none of it works. Makes it look worse. If u have no sunlight that will hit the window splash back well you’ll love it. If u do have the sun hit that side I strongly advise don’t get a glass splash back!

Hi, I can't comment on point 1. Perhaps post a plan of your kitchen. I have a window splashback- love it!! The sink is near it, so yes it gets 'splash' BUT I've found it to be incredibly forgiving. You don't see the splash marks because your eye is drawn beyond the window. It gets a clean once-a-week. I don't feel compelled to clean it obsessively. I've had standard glass splashback in the past- yes it was easy to clean, but I was cleaning it daily as it showed up every single splash or streak.
