Lounge Room help.....?

Kms91

Just recently got this new Eagle picture.

What else does the room need (or what in there needs to be taken away) to make it more appealing?

Hi robo25267, my sister has a similar lay out, all windows and doors plus a staircase that leaves little wall space for furniture. I am not sure if this would work for you as it is difficult to see the space properly in the pics and also the dimensions of the furniture might not work. But could you turn the lounge to face the sliding doors (good feng shui!) and butt it up either 1. against the stair corner? The TVC could move to where the single white chair is ( on an angle as it is a big telly) and then single chairs opposite, one where the tv is now, the other in the corner near the sliding doors. 2 on its left side against the wall between the windows? I am not sure if that leaves enough space to get past the lounge and the wall in either case. The maroon wall seems the best space for the TV but it is the largest wall so I see why you have it configured as it is now. If they fail, try swapping the lounge and chairs to the other wall and the tv against the maroon wall. The lounge could be as close as possible to the tv which let's you walk behind it along the window wall to the stairs? I know, not ideal to have a tv facing windows but your curtains would help.

A glazed door would allow more light whilst still providing privacy. I would be replacing the cabinet with a smaller one that is a little taller, then you don't have to hang the TV on the wall. A bright rug and a large colourful print above lounge suite will also make a big difference.

You could flip the living 90 degrees to the left, making the tv along that longest wall but aligned more left obviously. Depending on how much you wanted to spend, you could invest in joinery which incorporates the tv and books, which then also adds massive amounts of storage. Could be too long of a space for this set up, but stretched out a little with a nice rug it could work well :) please show us pics when you decide!

Furniture placement is the main one I see. Move it around rather than being up against the walls. Unless you use the middle as a dance floor...... Try a few scenario's by deciding what happens in this room. Then do more browsing on Houzz. Don't look for the colours get the layout right first, then look at dressing the room.

Surely you need some entertainment in the room>? Take a look at this beauty. It is called a BeoPlay A9. I suggest Get the black one and it would fit right in to the room.

should i paint a wall to break up the whiteness....or put a coffee table in the middle or a statement chair or 2? or something else on the wall? or move the mirror to the other corner of the wall that has the picture?

Kms91 you have some strong pieces in a large open room, which contrast too much from the room. Yes changing your paint colour would soften than contrast making it feel more cohesive and comfortable, but it also needs to create a space. It seems as thought he sofas are placed around the rooms perimeter, but for what purpose? They are not centered or focused around anything, it's do they create a conversation zone.

You can create this by positioning the sofas in a square, off the walls, and being mindfulof walkways, then introduce a coffee tale, even a rug over carpet for adding colour or texture which is sorely lacking.

The black on black builds no character, and jars against the room itself.

It appears to me to feel the mirror, cantilevered lamp and cushions are one person, whilst the lounges, and eagle art are another.

The blackness needs softening both with texture and colour.

Create groupings of interest with groups of decorator items and some considered lighting.

Create a focus. Choose a high impact wall or a nice corner with a good vantage point to adjoining rooms and build a setting with your favorite elements. I'd start with perhaps the armchair and ottoman, the cantilevered lamp and an occassional table. Maybe a metallic drum etc with an object or pile of books. A quiet space with a purpose. Then continue along this theme.

Thanks.....i guess the sofas are placed like that as when we use that room we entertain larger numbers of people therefore have to make the most of seating space (sometime we put in extra single chairs). But will try pulling the sofas in so they are closer. Also there are 2 sets of doors that are open when we use the room.

I am wondering about taking the urn out of that room as i don't really think it links.

When the doors are open i don't think the eagle picture will really fit on any other wall.

I have got some new cushions coming which are metallics and natural colours. Pic below.

I do like the idea of a rug and coffee table in the middle with a few items on the coffee table.

I guess if i pull the sofas in it will be the edges that will look bare?

You should keep playing with what you have already in this space to get a look at different layouts & sometimes you need to be ruthless, budget allowing of course! Meaning that there is a line that you know how far you want to go & don't forget this is you & your families space more than the visitors! Do you like this style of painting? It could add warmth & life to the long wall in this space...

And a rug, I know these are not the right colours in the room for your walls and lounge but just thought that like most Houzz users you just want some inspiration to start the ball rolling.

Move the Eagle picture off centre, towards a corner & use your lamp to throw light on it.

I agree with everyone else. It is a huge room and, as such, the sofas should be pulled away from the walls and into the centre to allow easy conversation since the room isn't used to watch TV. Not many people have such a large room to use for formal living - you should exploit the space!

The eagle picture is too small for the wall that it is currently on and too small to serve as a feature/focus point for the room. It could be moved to a smaller wall, near one of the sets of doors or replaced with something else.

A rug in a lighter colour that is big enough to sit underneath at least the front legs of the sofas would help to disconnect the sofas from the carpet as they currently meld together.

The single swivel chair, foot stool and lamp could remain in one corner as a reading nook.

I'm personally not a fan of the urn - especially in black. I don't think it goes with all of the modern and metallic elements in the room. I would definitely remove it or, if it remains, put a lush, pot plant with long, hanging green foliage in the urn and move the urn to a bare corner.

I'm not sure about the mirror. Does it have a purpose - to reflect a nice outlook or to reflect daylight to brighten the room? It seems to have been shoved in a corner because it didn't go anywhere else. I would consider whether it serves a function or whether it should be removed and utilised elsewhere.

Could it be an option to wallpaper the big wall that the Eagle picture is on in a natural concrete look wallpaper (example below), making that wall the feature.

Then pulling chairs in and adding a off white shaggy rug with a coffee table on top of the rug?

I agree with haephestus about the mirror.....i just dont really have anywhere else to put it.

Wondering what it could look like with the mirror in the corner (where the urn is) and the lamp where it is now......and wallpapered the big wall with the picture where it already is?

I have too many questions. What is the main purpose of the room? I can see another living area though the doorway. What is on the fourth wall? do you use it in the day, at night, and normally how many people on a daily basis. What are the gatherings for? To watch tv, have large meetings, activities in the open space. Do you need some intimate spaces - With the current layout you can really only talk to the people on the same couch as you. Think about how you really use it regularly and layout to suit. Definitely missing some tables and rugs. If people are chatting in groups, create some more intimate zones.

Eagle needs company, on that size wall maybe two more complementary pics that size, or to be feature of a smaller zone. At least move him to the right on that big wall.

Mirror, I do love the mirror but - sideways over a fireplace mantle, in an entry or upright in a bedroom, It's not needed in a large living area unless you all like standing in front of it.

The urn- what is its purpose? It looks like it's the uncle that no one really talks to and hasn't gone home yet ;). Maybe the hallway where he can be a standalone feature, that people can say hi to on their way past, supported by a picture on the wall to add interest.

It doesn't cost anything to move some things around, so give that a go first.

Just a small suggestion, but the picture needs to moved down closer to the sofa. The rule is 6-9 inches above. Good luck/

Room is used for sitting and socialising in with people, say 10-12 or so. It probably looks bigger in the pics than it is. (its easy to have a conversation with someone over the other side). Used in day sometimes but mostly at night. When we use the room the doors are open like in the pics below.

Here are some more pics with the furniture moved around a bit. And the sofas pulled in.

I definitely want to get an off white shaggy rug for the middle and a coffee table as well.

And the mirror and urn will go.

What did anyone think about the wallpaper idea on the wall behind the eagle pic? I realise this pic is not really the right size etc for such a large wall but i want to make it work and make it a feature as i love the pic and it definitely wouldn't look that good on any other wall in this room.

Any suggestions on where to pick up a biggis

h rug that is not too expensive?

Also what about this style coffee table below?

Much better already. You can see how the mirror is balancing out the eagle and lamp. The urn is now in a better place too as a bookend to the seating and balancing height between the tall curtains and low couches. Pictures on the wall do that to.

Can't comment on wallpaper seems funny to have a stone look with the carpet but it is your taste that is important plus make sure it works with eagle

    Hi Kate,

I got a sample of the wallpaper and its not a good choice. I was more thinking do you think that that wall should have a wall paper of some sort on it (or be painted a different colour)? so it doesn't seem so bare?
