I quite like the console table. It has a lot of character, even if it isn't modern. I think an art deco piece can work with a modern home quite well. A retro poster would help to tie it together since it's a modern design trend, but it's age would be more in keeping with the console table.

You could potentially look at lightening the console table, although it's current colour seems to work well with your front door and provides nice consistency in the entrance.

As for what else you need in the entrance, I think you should go with simple functional pieces, so it really depends upon how you use the space. Do you need to area to put your shoes on/take your shoes off? If so, a bench seat with baskets underneath to store the shoes would be a good idea. If you need somewhere for kids to store their school bags, then a series of cubby holes or hooks might work better for you. I'm not a big fan of buying furniture just to fill a space. I think it should have some sort of function.

As for more wall decorations, I don't think you can go wrong with a mirror in an entrance. It allows you one last check before you leave the house and can often help to reflect light in an area which usually doesn't get a lot of direct sunlight.

The rug looks okay, but doesn't really strike me as modern or retro, so I'm not sure it really works. It also looks a little short for the space. Do you need a rug? I'd probably decide on what elements you want to add to the room and get a rug at the same time. If you go with a big, bold print on the wall, then you may want a neutral rug. If you go with neutral artwork or a mirror, you may want a colourful rug to provide interest (and also to disguise any dirt tracked in through the front door).

Celebrate the sideboard by decorating to suit, or ditch it. It was never in a sterile space. it needs warm walls and the vintage prints Miranda has shown would help liven ithe space up. The rug is not doing anything for the space. It should add warmth by color or texture. Given the door swings to the left, some art on that wall and a narrow console on the right with a mirror to reflect the art.

ditch everything in the entrance. replace the cupboard with a large colorful canvas print to fit in that entire area. paint the walls a nice plain modern colour. put a large decorative pot at center of wall where plant is

I was thinking of a large (34 x 48") version of this in the entry in a thin black gloss frame - not sure if it would be too dark though. I do like the idea of the bench seat underneath.

Unfortunately, my husband has an aversion to mirrors, which is what I originally had planned .

There are wall lights either side of the door, and the one on the right has a coat rack below it.... which we use - we live in a sub tropical climate. Maybe I could put a mirror on the left wall? And an umbrella stand - we could use one!

Absolutely get rid of side board ,it takes over and does not go . Then i would also get rid of plant and find an elongated sculpture , something like those slim jamacan ladies. Maybe get some wall shelves and have some small pieces and get some art work, not big a splash of small squares.

The rug was a stop gap purchase - we couldn't find anything we loved, and we had to catch the debris and wet feet that out darling Samoyed (11 years old) drags in everyday. It's done that, but I'm still on the lookout for a replacement.

I think I need to find a much taller black ceramic pot for my plant as well!

i really like the painting. on the other wall a wide rectangular mirror would suit.

No, I'm sure I've seen his reflection in our ensuite mirror from time to time. But, we're both getting on a bit now, and that could have something to do with it... Though, I live in my own world, where I imagine everyone's eyesight is as bad as mine, so I still don't look too bad!!! Until I put my glasses on.......

But we're both healthy and active, which is what counts!
