There are DIY awnings available at places like Bunnings, Masters that provide weather protection over doorways; a shade sail may be an option for a bigger area and if you have suitable fixing points. Can you provide a picture of the area that you want to shade or cover?
Millie on ABC gardening did a segment awhile ago where she made a rustic pergola out of found objects. She used branches and held them upright using old gal rubbish bins filled with bricks and rubble. Then she put more branches across the top. Free if you get the materials from hard rubbish or tip shops!
Michelle Archard that sounds like a shanty town aesthetic so I hope it looked better than it sounds. For rentals you can't beat a large market umbrella. A good one will still be cheaper than building a pergola and you can take it with you when you move.
