How often do you eat ready-made meals in your home?
Comments (15)So should the oldies have a proper meal. My parents were quite vulnerable to eating a poor diet as they aged, with no one to take them in hand. I'm determined that won't happen to us. Plus, I spent a fair bit of my life in places where you ate what was available seasonally, so it was all fresh and unprocessed and had actual flavour. (Of course, in some of those places, you were desperate for anything even remotely green by the end of winter!) I also spent a good part of my life eating fruit and veggies trucked several thousand km from California or Florida to Canada. Been there, done that, never again. Eating apples that have been in cold storage for months, or tomatoes that have travelled hundreds of kilometres, or someone's idea of a 21st century version of the old TV dinner, just doesn't cut it with me. As much as possible, local produce, my own herbs, and meat from a reliable local butcher. Frozen peas, beans, even spinach and broccoli, fine, all good, along with canned tomatoes and beans. But that's where I draw the line. Life is too short to be eating mediocre food just because it's convenient....See MorePOLL: How do you keep your kitchen knives?
Comments (22)I use a magnetic strip and love that it keeps the bench clear. I don't like knife blocks very much as they are hard to keep clean. I use quite a few knives frequently and I don't find they get dusty at all – and the ones I use less frequently, like the fish filleting knife, I just wipe with a damp cloth before using but, as I usually touch it up with the sharpener before tackling a fish, I would wipe it after sharpening anyway. I have mine near the stove but in a reasonably discreet spot so I don't feel that they are out on display....See MoreHow often do you: replace your dish sponge?
Comments (16)Never ever used sponges - And I've been a house and garden maintenance dudette for over four decades!! I have never owned a bucket and mop either ... I have a dozen or so purpose bought facecloths instead of sponges and the like (in a colour that ties in with the kitchen accent colour) The "facecloths" are used and are allowed to dry out for about two days ... then machine-washed with the bathtowels and dried outdoors. M My current "turquoisey" kitchen facecloths are still going strong after 12 years!! For pots, oven and casserole dishes, etc. I use stainless steel scourers - with a softer stainless steel flat scourer for non-stick stuff. The scourers - as well as the kitchen sink drains - get spray-sanitized with a no-smell 1or2% strength bleach after every use!...See MorePOLL: Have your pets influenced your home improvement 'style?'
Comments (6)We have two cats that are indoor pets. Sadly the male took a jaunt outside and got a few sctratches and tears from a large neighbour cat. He began territorial peeing on any cushion, stray coat, laundry basket, no matter it was on top of a piano or speaker or even a bed. Our piano varnish ruined, so very much washing.. (Thank God for Nature's Miracle). Now we have to keep him incarcerated in the laundry area which has an enclosed porch and cat tree and so forth. He comes in for supervised visits and we take him outside every other day to run and play. When we move we will be planning an area specifically for him. It's so sad as we never would treat him like this if he could break the habit, but we've tried everything and he's hooked like an addict. He isn't as happy as he used to be....See MoreKim Westwood
