I see this is a very old thread , with lots of comments . I've just skim read them , but I haven't seen anyone suggest anything like my 'top-of-my-head' idea -- I love the wood , and the white contrast , but pretty boring . Whats your favourite colour , or what ties in with the other rooms ? It might be blue or red or yellow or orange or green , as examples . So paint the skirting board and around the door a pastel shade of your choice , and add a small 30cm x 30cm abstract painting featuring that colour as the primary dominant one , above ( or possibly below , or maybe even get 2 matching/complementary ones ) the control panel . One lighting crowd suggested glass shades -- I'd actually go for someothing large but wooden , in much the same shade as your floors and steps , with LED bulbs -- you can get some stunning ones around 80-100 cm in diameter ( sort of a star ball shape ) for $300-400 . Total budget then $500 plus a painter and maybe electrician , unless you DIY .

The vertical blinds MUST go. Sorry, but they are hideous and add nothing. Get some fabulous mid century fabric pattern in some gorgeous colours and make curtains. You can make a couple of scatter cushions also out of this fabric. Then pick out your favourite colour from the fabric to add some plain cushions. If you have gone with the patterned rug option such as asquithoatley has suggested, then just pick out the gentler colour for plain curtains to compliment the rug. Either way then choose cushions using any, or all of these colours. Then you should look for some decorative items in these colours such as beautiful bottles that might pick up an aqua, or some lamps with bases that colour to put on a side board. For the wall I suggest that you look on ebay in mid century modern and see if any wall sculptures attract you. There was quite a fad for enamelled metal wall sculptures back in the 60s which would add some life. Try to find one that also incorporates one of the pattern colours. Susan_66 made a great suggestion with a Howard Arkley print of a mid century house. You might even find one that is similar to your house style which would be fun. Happy hunting. You have some good pieces and they will work well with a bit of fun fabric or rug to link them.

Hi, there seem to be a lot of themes clashing in this entry. the front door is very modern, bold and masculine, yet the wallpaper is Classical, feminine and recessive. also, the grey tones are similiar but don't match/ suit each other. there doesn't seem to be warmth to the space, which is what i would want to add. finally, the mirror opposite the front door is proportionally wrong for the wall - and the colour/ shape don't suit the scheme. firstly, lets scratch the dainty look - you have a modern house, so let's work with what we have. for the walls, i would select a dark beige colour, something earthy but don't go too yellow. this will contrast well with the grey tiles and add warmth to the space. further, this will better suit the timber tones in the front door. you could even get paint with sand added for a softer and more luxurious touch. i would also continue this colour scheme down the hall since you cannot break the paint colour mid-wall. the hanging piece on the wall opposite the front door should match the proportion to the front door (it doesn't have to be the same size, but it should match the proportions) - this will look great when visitors approach the door because they can see through - so there is a little bit of mirroring - this is perhaps your opportunity to add some softness - by softness, i mean nature - you could have a painting of ferns or plants - some green perhaps. again, this will bring a bit of your outside garden in. the niche's are always a dilemma - these should only be built into a design if you have a specific object to house in them - also, these modern niches are too narrow to put a proper object in, which limits you to putting a painting in there. i would be looking for a limestone wall sculpture ( like a carving) because this would react well with the downlight in the niche. to add some glamour/ opulence without making it too much of a contrast with the rest of the house, i would also choose a modern but large skirting board - i'd even paint it in a gloss white to create a stark contrast with the grey tiles and the beige walls. finally, to glam up the walls, i'd add some wall lights - we don't have the ceiling height for an elaborate chandelier - and even if we did, the space isn't big enough for so much light - we want something ambient and gentle. 2 on each wall (either side of the niches) plus 1 on either side of the new painting - remember to stick to the modern theme - there are some classy black fittings that have notes of classicism without the bedazzling. get a nice thick black frame for your new painting as well.
