Need help/ideas with increasing functionality/floorspace of a 1947 Californian bungalow...
Comments (10)Ok ... Here's a sketch - pouring the money you would have have spent on the side extension into a new ensuite and family shower room where the kitchen used to be - with pocket doors for access - having walk in wardrobe behind bed . Island kitchen and moving the dining onto the deck - possibly room for stools at island ?!?! Laundry cupboard rather than complete utility room ... It's just an idea to chat with your architect about ! Hope it gives you food for thought ... Oh and added a bath upstairs with an ensuite - will need to check that this is possible as a full bath weighs loads !!!...See MoreCreating more space in dining area, perhaps with banquette seating?
Comments (12)Thanks Louie and Georgi for your comments. Great suggestions for me to think through. Thanks for taking the time to provide that detail. To help see the space a bit better, I've taken out the wine rack and replaced it, temporarily, with a shelf (that was in a different part of the house) that matches the one holding the water filter (the second shelf is to hold our phone and modem - again, due to a small house, it's really the only place the phone and modem can live). Plus, I've extended the table so that I could get a feel for the size table the area could potentially accommodate, now that the wine rack isn't there. The size of the table with the extension is: 1800 x 840. Ignore the look of the current table - regardless of whether we go banquette seating or not, we would like to change the table and perhaps a pedestal table would be best so that it makes it easier to get to the seats at the back. By the way I noticed that when I look at this post on my iPad I don't see all the photos I included like I do when looking at it on my laptop. Hopefully the photos I've included show okay for others looking at this. Thank you....See MoreDesperately in need of ideas for my kids' rooms
Comments (17)We keep a bedroom permanently set aside and decorated for our three grandchildren. Good storage is essential, as we have train sets, cars, Lego, a play kitchen, dolls, dinosaurs, games, etc. We found different quilt covers a way of making the room look more personalised when the grandchildren come to stay e.g. a bright cover with animals for our youngest grandson, dinosaurs for our other grandson and bright, floral colours for our granddaughter. A very easy and inexpensive way to change the look of the room. When they tire of these, we can easily change them. Artwork is another point of difference. Both of our grandsons love planes, and I found a limited edition planes print in a Salvos shop for under $40 - already framed. I found a canvas-coated map of the world online, already mounted, for under $40, which is a favourite with all three. The IKEA pretend kitchen was a charity store find for under $20, and when the grandchildren no longer play with it (it is a favourite as they play ‘restaurants’), it will be returned to a charity shop. I bought one of those sling-type small bookcases and filled this with a range of books. This is much easier than wall shelving and it is does not take up very much space, and is great for selecting bedtime stories....See MoreGet rid of the study to make the kitchen more functional?
Comments (10)Hi Kimberly As a kitchen designer one of the important things we factor into a kitchen design is getting it to connect socially to the other living spaces. Unfortunately, by tucking your kitchen back into this Study area, you will be creating a blind spot and disconnecting the kitchen and the users of the kitchen from the Living area. There is a way to make good use of this study space though; where this is by way of incorporating a Butler's pantry into the design and tucking it in behind the kitchen. You could achieve a lot more storage this way, you could also put dishwasher and large clean-up sink in the Butler's pantry. Doing this would allow you to remove the large sink from your island, giving you more prep and plating space as well as making the island a more sociable space with less clutter; and perhaps just have a small bowl and tap at one end for general use. Removing the hall wall is also a good idea to increase the usable living space. Making these changes would also enable you to add 600mm to 700mm more to the length of your kitchen bench where your cook-top is, as well adding more length to the Island bench. Hope this is helpful.
