White or grey/black grout?

Hi Everyone, we have just finished tiling our new kitchen and need help deciding on white, grey or black grout. As the tiles are not yet grouted the shadow lines give us a good indication of what a darker grout will look like but our concern is that it may be 'too much' with the natural sandstone wall, Carrara marble and a Dulux Antique (dark green) island bench. Too many things competing directs me back to keeping the backsplash simple and let the natural stones be the feature. Note the sandstone still needs to be built to the floor on both sides of the supporting column.
Thoughts, advice and opinions please. Thanks in advance. Ax

Much as I love white, I used white in my bathroom with floor to ceiling white subways and it was the worst decision I ever made! White grout gets dirty very easily, then you will end up with dirty grey patches around the sink and stove areas. Best to go with a pale grey, perhaps just mix regular grey with white to soften it? I personally think the grey would be fairly unobtrusive & look much better in the long run than white with grey patches around the work zones! Plus a pale grey in between the white would echo the pale grey/white combo of the benchtops.

I would have white. You have the marble and the stone wall so I wouldn't want anything else being 'busy' to take the look away from either of those lovely features

ondering if you could tell me what your sandstone wall is (cladding, real stone blocks, etc). we are planning to do this behind our heaater in new family room, but having trouble finding something that looks authentic. cheers. oh, and definately white grout. classic, to match everything else, dark grout looks too busy, and will date really fast. (IMHO)

My suggestion is first talk to the builder to see what instructions he gave the tiler as i'm sure he doesn't want a dissatisfied client. Most tilers will check with the builder before grouting especially when a colour is not specified in a contract. I would then ask if the grout could be replaced, from the looks of it it will only be a couple of hours work. There is nothing worse than having to look at something you are not happy with. I would not use the paint product as it will alway look like it is covering a mistake. White will look better. Make sure the mixer body is waterproofed or you will have a leak in your wall, the membrane should lap onto the body from the wall if it is done well. All the best.

Thanks Nicole!! We actually went for white grout too in the end, and stacked them (mid century modern house, we thought it fitted better overall). I agreed with you that I wanted the detail of the tile to shine, not the shape of the tile. We still need to paint the rest of the room, etc., but I'm pleased. We had them sealed and used a supposedly more stain resistant grout (Davco Colour Elite). We loved the designs so much we put the 150mm blue jeans version in our pantry!! Thanks again for your reply. I would go with grey, much easier than constantly scrubbing the white, it doesn't stay white for long.

I would go with white... it is my understanding that with harsh cleaning darker colours will fade, whereas white will go back to white. Get them sealed well and clean immediately if they get nasty splashes.....

Humm seems pretty even with white or grey! My vote is for a light grey and yes, use a sealer as soon as its dry to help with cleaning.

I'm with you @denise595 - use light grey grout, in a tone that complements the marble bench, it will tie the tile & bench together & reduce starkness of the White

Definitely white. It will look so good especially with those white shutters. I actually disagree that white looks dirty. I think the grey always looks too busy.

Hello guartris,

Well I would take the inspiration from the picture you have posted.. Nicely done! I like the darker grout idea personally.. so grey would be my choice.. I love the different textures and feels with industrial lighting and oven with a period feel hood above the oven... One thing I would do.. Have all the cupboards with a touch/open mechanism.. They look so stylish without handles.. Nickel cup handles for drawers... : ))

I would go white. I've had white subway tiles with white grout as a splashback before and I sealed the grout and had no problems keeping the grout clean. I just gave it a wipe after cooking splattery things!
