Need help with a dark and uninspiring entry!

Hi Houzzers,
I hope you're having a lovely Friday.
I've been meaning to post this question for a while now and have finally got myself organised! I'd love your ideas on how to make our dark and uninspiring entry seem more warm and welcoming.
At the moment it's dark because we keep the venetians closed for privacy (we front on to a footpath that leads to a bus stop).
The entry area is also a small-ish space between the front door and the stairs leading up to the main living area (it's a townhouse with 4 levels).
I think we probably need a low-ish side table with a mirror or some artwork above it and some kind of lighting, but would love your thoughts/ideas.

Comments (2)You can foreshorten the hall with a striped rug. Add bright colors like this and who'll care about how long it is? The unity of the black frames might make for a great gallery grouping. Cut out the shapes of all your pictures in butcher paper and lay them out on the floor to plan a grouping. Then tape the to the wall where you want them to see how they'll feel. Comments (6)I think you could get the telly put over the fireplace. Might need a mantle to deflect radiant heat, not sure. But on the cables and power, I imagine they can get that sorted. Im guessing there is a wall behind you when you took the photos. I agree that a low corner modular sofa would look great. Just don't get it so long that it is up against the fireplace wall. Placed into that corner of end and piano walls . Then pop your cute chair where the sofa is now. Large ( big enough for the sofa front legs sit on it, I'm guessing 2x3m or even 3x4m) patterned rug to define the area. Can you move the piano to another room or against the computer area wall? Can you make the small windowed room the homework hub? Imagine a long bench against the window ( Ikea do a good cheap range that you make to fit your space). Ensuring the computers are in line of sight from the kitchen(?). Pull out the table to give it more space around it. Or flip it to run the other direction. Hard to tell from the pics the dimensions. Comments (16)Hi I really like the grey. It is on-trend, neutral and would allow the painting to 'pop.' Perhaps if the baskets were white the whole picture would hold together better. All of the photoshopped colours you have chosen are cool/blue toned and the baskets are warm/yellow toned. I think that is what is confusing you. Also the vase seems too tall for that setting. I agree with what a few people have said already about using an artwork that reflects light, either by framing it behind glass or using metallic materials on a canvas. 8 years agoDo you want to add some drama as in a sense of arrival. My first thoughts were to paint the handrail and that white post in black, either gloss or matt depending on decor choices. Then a black and white rug or runner,

So a low bench or console with mirror would be nice with a rug... your style preference will be the guide for all of these.
Do you like a white theme on timber with wallpaper for background & black or white for furniture. Is wallpaper an option? Like this elegant contemporary theme.
