Agree. Right now there is too much in this room and furniture backed up against the walls gives it a lifeless look. I think the place to start is to ask yourself what would be best use of this room? Fireplace is generally a focal point in a room. Yours can become one by creating space around it, i.e. stripping away all the furniture around it. Consider tiling or painting wall behind it. Bookcase looks jammed in. I would recommend removing & replacing with floating shelves. IKEA has great ones, which are not expensive. I would purchase the black ones, as each room should have some black in it to ground it. Place sofa facing fireplace, with sofa table behind it, where you can have a lamp. Just a few thoughts....

Just thinking, have you tried tv on a/c wall and small couch , lamp in front of large windows, love that rug from Freedom would tie in your style, some beautiful textured cushions (love the ones you have) maybe even a Mongolian one to complete the look and a tray with some special pieces would look wonderful, I love boho luxe.

Personally if I were to put a runner down the area I'd keep it either plain or a very soft muted colour palate maybe with the grey and natural colours as right now it looks quite classy so you don't want to make it to bold or in your face just soft and calming for the area to enhance it all as one look. I don't really think you need one at all as I love the softness of the area as a whole as it is, sometimes less is more but it once again comes down to personal taste.

Please excuse this quick dodgy recolour , but just wanted to show the difference some kind of contrast would add to the effect of the exterior. Whether it is painting the roof (because it is such a big part of the facade), rendering or painting the bricks or refinishing the windows in black or white, something to let the architectural features is the key to sprucing up the outside. I think someone mentioned adding a verandah too. That would depend on how much light already comes through the front. I can imagine one of the windows on the side being transformed into french doors leading to a lovely flagstoned garden. I love the black and white interior photos someone posted above too. anything to bring some contrast to all that mud coloured brick. What an inspiring project to have ahead of you, so many possibilities! I wish this were my little house :)))
