Kitchen Doors

We want to change our kitchen cupboard doors to handle-less, flat (contemporary) doors using the existing cupboards which are only a few years old - can we do this relatively easily and which is better - polyurethane or laminate melamine? Would really welcome advice! Thank you

Hi Clikmania, hmm... not too sure if this can be achieved using the existing cupboards... we're having both handles and no handles in our kitchen and the drawings show two different types of cabinetry (see attached detail #1 for standard with handles & detail #4 for handle-less doors)... a cabinet maker should be able to tell you if it's possible or not... as for the finish if you do end up going for the handle-less cupboards, it should definitely be poly or vinyl... bcoz of the gap required between each drawer, the top edge of each panel will be a lot more visible than your current setup so too many lines/edging if laminate... finally, are you really keen on this very costly exercise given your cupboards are only a few years old, or could it just be that you don't like the current handles (no offense)... have you considered maybe just replacing the handles for a more streamline contemporary look you're after?... I note your kickboards are black, so imo I think some nice black onyx handles would work a treat :) good luck!

Thank you very much Pazz - you're right I hate the handles but any handles on so many drawers will look really busy - I also strongly dislike the curved profile on the doors - it's just not my taste! It seems it's going to be a similar cost to replace the cupboards as well as the doors so I guess I should look at this route - still unsure about laminate vs polyurethane thou! Any suggestions?

Do you like white kitchen cabinets? (Personally I don't mind the look but think it probably needs more cleaning then most). Anyway, black and white is a classic combination and doesn't really become outdated. Even if you don't do the bench top yet or choose a different colour bench top later, everything goes with white.

Hi Magic M new kitchens have more drawers than doors. They also have soft closers on doors and drawers, as well as full extension runners on the drawers. Your kitchen is therefore immediately showing its age because it clearly has more doors and is probably missing the other elements I mentioned that are considered standard in today's functional kitchen. So it really comes down to your budget. If you have the budget I would replace the whole kitchen with cabinets (more drawers than doors) with a shaker style profile. Custom cabinets to the ceiling. Manmade stone such as Caesarstone benchtops. You could think about the same stone on the splashback as subway tiles are on their way out. If your budget doesn't run to a new kitchen then the Annie Sloan chalk paint as suggested is a good option on both the existing cabinets and the new add on ones. Any of your suggested colours in muted tones would work.

They can be either. It is up to the person who owns the home and the style they are wanting. It depends on lots of different reasons. What style home and kitchen are you having. Hamptons/Country or ultra slick. Do you want duck blue cabinets or bling shiny black. Are you having stone bench tops or wood or concrete bench tops. etc etc Cleaning is not a reason, because that should be done no matter what kind of cabinet door you have.
