need help with where to start with my reno.
Comments (5)Depends on your house and what you want. We planned out our renovation and have drawn a timeline in pencil on the wall and put the things we want to do on post it notes that we re arrange as we rethink what to do first etc... It keeps changing, things move up and down the line but every idea is still there. First thing is to get imagining and have fun thinking of what you want the place to look like. Look for some photos of rooms you like for inspiration and have fun scheming and dreaming! Then figure out your budget and see what can be done from your dream list. I think organising your to do list into chunks according to manageable budget amounts works. So like $5000, $2000 or whatever. The main things to do first is decide what you can leave as is, what works and plan the house around that. The less you have to change the better. The first things to do will be the ones that have the biggest impact, so typically new appliances, maybe new floors, reorganising rooms to flow and function practically, maximise sunlight and airflow, storage. Again it will depend entirely on what your house needs....See MorePlease comment on my first project

It reminds me of going to look at rental units when I was young. And personally, I hate the picture you found for the wall - too busy and just looks like you're trying too hard to add a 'pop' of colour so I hope you haven't bought that! I'd pick out some cushions in the same colours as the rug - so orange, red, black - and you could throw some green in there too as it looks like the plants you have are close to that room - put a couple of plants in there as well to liven things up. (Just noticed you do have a couple that I didn't even notice!) The long wall, that seems to run right through your apartment, I would paint a different colour so it's not all beige. A less expensive thing to do if it is where you are living - is to get some family photos up - lots in small frames work together, or photos of any travels you may have done - places you love. You can paint the outline of a large frame on your wall, and then put smaller framed photos inside which you can contniue to update as you life changes. Lay it out on the floor first to make sure it looks good together....See MoreHelp needed for our big reno plans
Comments (66)you are super-patient!!! :) :) thank you :) I'm so sorry but I do actually have a couple MORE thoughts!! argh! there are just so many different options.... and this is a bit of an all consuming puzzle to try to solve. here they are: 1) study could become main bathroom - leaving new Bed 4 as per plan since it is bigger & a better size for guests. in this option, some area could be stolen from the study to boost ensuite size - even if it just made the ensuite 1 full metre. Ideally not requiring study window to change. 2) WC could potentially be separate either within this space OR at the back of the old kitchen (allowing for the remaining, longish hall wall to be shorter again) oklouise you may think some of these ideas are not very workable & I'd be so glad for your feedback & comment (and anyone else's comments as well), it's really so incredibly helpful - unbelievably helpful - to have everyone's input. i'd love recommendations on which ideas & options might work best for that balance between function & budget...See MoreNeed help with my extension/reno floorplan
Comments (29)Daniel, can imagine you don't deal with a lot of fire places in QLD but South of that we do. It's like any beautiful old building we need to respect and conserve what is already there, a new addition can allow for more sleek and modern design. I had been very fortunate to own a beautiful federation house which was simply white inside with polished floor boards, fire places mostly timber, when we sold the new owners striped all beautiful arch ways and all exterior Fret work. I have recently seen an Architect show his work on this forum where the Bull Nose verandah's and metal posts were removed "they weren't original", even though they would have been a 100 yrs, and were replaced with more modern square posts. Look at what is happening on the North Shore Pacific Highway, the past government (Labor) has approved multi story apartment blocks along this highway destroying beautiful heritage houses and gardens to do this and losing any historic charm a big lose for Sydney and Australia , and while not doing anything to update ANY transport to support .this Conserve what we have as is done in other countries for future generations cheers...See More- 9 years ago
