I too feel like the bare concrete is what is holding the verandah back the most. If decking is too pricey for you, painted concrete would improve it but be careful it's not too slippery to walk on in the wet.

Why does the concrete have to stay? Cost to remove only? Not enough clearance to ground under if decked over after removing concrete.....?

Can deck over it quite easily in many cases.

In FL, where i am from. all homes are built on a concrete base, they don't even put anything between the concrete and the flooring. Carpet and vinyl or linoleum are just glued directly down. Used to be alot of terrazo applied, little chipped rocks mixed with cement. My one house the porch etc. were made of large pieces of broken saltillo tile, i think, looked like clay pots, mixed with cement. so i think however you choose to cover it, it will not be a problem. Only depth should make a big difference, but i would see no reason to ever tear it up.

i agree with fianou completely, cover with plants and furniture, no one will notice, plant mint or thyme in the crack and it will look great and smell great. yummm.

You could look at tiling over it

a lot of work for short term, no? See, i was thinking of just stenciling it. But if the wood fades then you will show 2 different surfaces clearly forever. if you don't like the gap, I did this once. things kept growing under my 3 steps to the porch. finally I took a few bricks, cleared out the space and put them, no more catching toes or having things grow. like having edging to your tile.

Stenciling is something l had not considered, clever idea! The builders are still here and will fashion a step for the concrete, timber gap.Thanks again for your idea....l was even thinking of putting in fake grass!

Yes agree with flanou and havingfun - and you could add an outdoor rug too to bring the furniture together - it will look great!

You could get out door porcelain pavers and glue them down. Or pay someone to polish and seal the concrete.

I'm with the others - cover the concrete with decking. Even if you have to have a step down, it will look better.

You could go for a weathered timber look but use the Millboard material which is not timber and is maintenance free. As it has no timber it doesnt need an airgap between it and the concrete! if your patio is going to weather then it may tie in.

the second option pave either slate, stone or stone look tiles - whatever you can obtain for a low cost preferably second hand - I love recycling and it usually looks good when done with taste.

If extension is an option, deck or verandah is a great place
