Floorboards dilemma

We are going to put down some floating floorboards in our living/dining/kitchen area. We would like something that is warm (colour-wise) and probably midway between light and dark. The problem is that all our furniture is oak and is about the same colour!

Is it too much to have the floorboards and furniture the same colour? How could you make it not look too monotone and flat/boring?

Area rugs would help. Under a dining table for instance. I suppose it depends on what pieces are oak and where they are situated in the space.

In our last house, we had spotted gum floors. A lot of our furniture is blackwood, which is similar in tone. We put afghan and turkish rugs and kilims down and it looked terrific if I do say so myself.

Does the step have a nosing edge? You could run the carpet over the lip of the nosing and provide a carpet edge along the width of the step. Keeps the appearance cleaner overall.

Hello, annb! No, not really :-( It will be part of a mini reno later this year, so I still have time up my sleeve. So many of the decisions (like flooring, paint colours, finishes etc) have a knock-on effect, that I need to decide on everything before I start. I think I need to get a cork flooring expert to come and look at our floors and tell me what is and isn't possible in terms of changing the colour of the existing floors. I still think Smartstrand carpet will be the choice for the carpeted areas. But who knows.....I'm feeling quite paralysed to the point of losing confidence about changing anything. I might need a professional to help me decide !

What a shame it could save you a lot of money, are they cheap floating or timber. We had an old federation house which had beautiful old floors with a bit of worm and patching but came up to a lovely finish with a lot of character. If you go for a new floor, I'd go light for a Scandi look to work with your furniture if that's your stuff in the photos

I've lived in many homes that were floorboards throughout including the kitchen. There really isn't any downside to it as long as you're not in the habit of dropping cast iron pans on the floor. I've always hated tiles in the kitchen as food finds it way onto the floor and stains the grout. My pick would be timber or lino in the kitchen. Never understood the fascination for tiles on kitchen floors. The junction between that surface and timber is typically ugly.

I'd presume oak is the lighter end of the scale so choose a darker version of a similar pattern. What looks nice on a fancy brochure may not suit your dwelling or furniture. A holistic approach must be taken to create a great area rather than just picking favourite colours.

What may be favourite colours, shades or patterns, these may not work together. Good designers have thousands of favourites.......
