Paving around pebblecrete- pool area

Hi all,

I am new to houzz, what an amazing resource! I am rather useless when it comes to decorating outdoors. We plan on paving our pool area. It is currently grass and old paver. The problem is the pool is bordered by pebblecrete. We feel it is too expensive and time consuming to remove the pebblecrete. We need to pick some paver that will look nice in this area. The trims of our home are woodland grey. We back onto a reserve, and like the bushy feel to our home and yard. We cannot decide between are darker grey paver or a sandstone coloured paver. Any advice would be so very much appreciated!

Hi Amy, Isn't Houzz fantastic - it's easy to spend hours here looking at ideas and hearing other peoples ideas.

If you've not already done it, get the high pressure hose out and give the pebblecrete a clean to get the colours to come up (give the lower stones in your retaining wall a clean up too so you can check their colours).

Looking at the colour of the pebblecrete now and seeing that the area will be shaded for at least part of the day and you won't want it to feel too dark - especially in winter, I'd go for the sandstone look unless it's completely at odds with the retaining wall. Most places selling pavers will sell you or give you a single paver that you can bring home to check the colours in situ. I'm sure that it will look fantastic when it's done.

Hey Paul, check out a place called ecooutdoors.com.au for inspiration. I'm not sure if they're up your way but I'm sure you could get materials shipped. They have such a beautiful store with brilliant ideas. I'd be considering a stone that is cool under foot on hot Brisbane days and at least 30mm thick. You have an oval-ish shaped pool so you might consider a small coping stone to replace the brick then move on to a larger stone instead of the dated pebble, maybe a 'cush' limestone or go a bit glam and do a herringbone pattern with the right stone. Hi Amy, Isn't it great! You can paint pebblecrete but my first thought is don't touch it. If you haven't already, pressure clean it to get the true colours. Personally, I'd lean towards the sandstone coloured paver unless there's an overwhelming of grey in your in the stone in your retaining wall (and because I love my high pressure hose, I'd give these a quick go over to check the colour too - what can I say - if I'm dragging the high pressure hose out to do one thing, do 'em all) - only because it's shady spot at some point during the day so the lighter sandstone will keep it light rather than feeling too shady (particularly in winter). Good luck - I'd love to see the end result.

Thanks Fiona. We'd love to landscape the far side but sadly that is our neighbour's property and the river rock lined area right beside the pool fence is an easement that runs like a creek when we get rain so can't plant in there :). I do plan to sneak in a few more of the Golden Cane palms onto the neighbouring paddock as some have self seeded anyway- hopefully create a nice screen. I have my eye on some nice pots and two lovely wooden loungers with cream cushions, all in budget. But I'll only get them once I decide what to do with the paving area to better blend with the pool surround. I've just had the area pressure washed about 2 weeks ago so my thinking is to go with the repaint in the medium grey and hope we get 5 years out of it.

It’s the wall colour that doesn’t look nice everything else is fine. Repaint the wall it’s easy and you want regret it , use neutral colours but not light go for darker and for the corner I would plant giant bird of paradise either in the huge pot or if possible in the ground but keep it well away from the wall to give it space to grow and give you tropical look and feel. If you are using pots you can have few of them they won’t drop leaves in the pool.
