1973 house exterior and fence ideas?

This is a mockup of what I'm thinking...It's very busy looking now, I thought painting the brick a pale colour or white might simplify the look? I feel it needs a roof cornice or something to add weight up there. And do I do a rendered fence with columns and iron inserts or a sandstone base...ideas?? The retaining walls need re-doing, so I might be able to tier them at the front.

Looks quite good! Just don't paint the brickwork on the house.....Rendered columns and everything else looks really good though. Sandstone to fence (and driveway perhaps?) if you can fit it into the budget.

Our place is a similar colour scheme but with Mission Brown trim and lots of white balustrading. I went over the trim, white columns and balustrading in Woodland gray which makes it less prominent. Looks much better from a distance.

Australia has nice examples of painted and rendered Art Deco homes. If it was a different kind of brick I would say keep it, but I think painting/rendering would really brighten the place. I love the windows. Although all pics here don't exactly match your style, they are all of that era. As mentioned in above comments, there are mix of landscaping styles that suit from conifer/gravel/grass to cottage rose garden to an Australian native garden. Do what reflects you and how much time you have for your garden.

Hi Jen, Great house, I think a charcoal colour would look great on windows, guttering, steps , porch and brown bricks, here’s a few inspiration photos for you of what you may like for your house and garden, I would keep the bricks and just update the trims etc, could look great, trim off the scallop edge on blinds for a more modern look, you could even paint them to match trims( I have done this ) love the raised beds , adds a real feature, could look fabulous.

I have always thought black goes well with your coloured brick. So dark, like you already have, but darker. And a simple fence, a good variety is available from Stratco or similar retail stores. But I think landscaping with shrubs and flowering plants, would improve the facade the most.

I love all your thoughts. I would like to create an entry near the side of the house and have a raised walkway/deck which is enclosed with timber slatting. This could separate the garage and make the entry special. I love the timber work and could include this at the back of the garage. Hoping for a new double driveway which would make space for two cars to be pull up on the driveway but only need one car under cover. I don;t think I will add a garage door just leave open. I would still like access via the back part of the garage to the back yard. Difficult to change the size of the front windows. I will try to take more photos and post. Does anyone know of where I could source someone to draw up a 3d image of changes to the front for a minimal cost. Would love a low 50's front fence and will definitely improve the garden at the front, remove all that is there and replace

Thanks, I love the cape cod coastal American style (having visited a lot with my American Husband) but I'm hoping that is not clouding my judgement....also very inspired by this Beverly Hills house!

I'm just not sure now if I should be staying with the history of the house and doing something a bit more retro...

I think a formal garden like in that beverly hills house would look really great with what you have planned. Its a big grand old house so it really suits to go quite grand in the style. i think the pencil pines in that picture would be a good addition to your front garden, The long lines really suit the height of the house. Some height in the garden is really what's lacking in your garden, also consider long tall flowers like lillies, agapanthus, hippeastrums or alliums. A few pants that echo the line and height of the columns would look great.

Thanks for the great ideas...funny you should talk about the height...three overly large conifers used to sit along this side of the house...they were removed by the previous owner. I love the dwarf or slender connifers that don't grow as wide and imposing.

I really like your mock up, but would you consider painting shutters white like the balcony railing. I like the formal garden as well. I love Cape Cod style as well. Good luck
