How would you furnish?

We're still in design phase of our home. It's open plan, modern country.

I'm after ideas as to how you would furnish the room, and whether the room needs to be bigger. We're trying to capture views all around, and make the room feel open and light.

Image 1 and 2 show slightly smaller room size with larger kitchen, think I'll go this style/shape.

Image 3 and 4 is larger room size with galley kitchen, I'll stick with kitchen in image 1 I think.

Interested in thoughts!

Nice layout. I like the window placements, it's giving you the ability to turn you focus away from the cooking area. One of my "bugbears" with open plan is having to live with the cooking just after eating............I would love to see a huge rug on the sitting side with timber flooring and leather and timber for the furniture. I like the though of Leather as it can be cleaned more easily, no matter how good your extractor fan fabric will be bombarded by air born grease ;) you can haul a rug out for cleaning. I find the layout of the top pic more pleasing but all seem to provide good flow.

Hi Roz, Looks like you have a beautiful space with lots of light, great idea to go with a tropical theme and the bar will be a fantastic touch. If you want something a little more casual, have you considered adding a [drinks trolley/ bar cart[(https://www.houzz.com.au/magazine/bar-trolleys-let-the-good-times-roll-stsetivw-vs~56579761) instead of a built-in bar? Also, there are some great ideas in [this story[(https://www.houzz.com.au/magazine/get-the-look-caribbean-style-with-a-twist-stsetivw-vs~76280038) that might help you with furniture and decor. As a lot of other people have said, natural fibres are going to be your best friends, as are lots of [beautiful houseplants[(https://www.houzz.com.au/magazine/our-10-hottest-indoor-plants-stsetivw-vs~27299305) to add lushness and freshness to the space, perfect with all of those windows. You could buy a lovely bedroom comfy chair with a little side table for a reading nook if you just feel like relaxing with good light, I liked kiwimills suggestion of a day bed with storage, or you could make storage, cupboard for shoes built in if you wanted then add plants or nick nacks on the top of the cupboard for texture and designer look, if you are like me, you never have enough room for shoes!!

Ok, I see ...one possibility would be to retain the unit as shelving where it is and wall mount the tv on the adjacent wall so that you can optimise seating arrangement. Otherwise I think you are on the right track, a circular rug would work, maybe a couple of mid century chairs might look nice, you could put some trailing plants up high away from your little one, maybe a basket or two to keep toddler clutter in check would go with an eclectic kind of look. If you move to a larger space in the future, mid century chairs would be easy to pair with a couch.. I think try and bring as much storage as you can to keep the space manageable.

I was just looking over all the advice and the drawings that have been done for me showing how paint would look in various places. Thank you so much everyone for the time and help that you have given me - plus your honest opinions. I have decided that over the long term, all of the raw timber on the walls will go, but I may also remove a section of the wall joining kitchen to loungeroom. I am not sure whether it will be removed and sheeted or whether it will be sheeted over in some places, and painted in others. What I decide is going to determine what the architraves and window frames look like, because to sheet over the timber means that the current architraves will not be thick (deep) enough. A carpenter has already suggested just using painted MDF due to the difficulty in getting timber architraves at present and their cost. These are decisions that I am not ready to make yet. I have no idea whether it would be best to keep timber window frames and door frames or whether to just have white. Your opinion on this would be appreciated too. For now, the lounge room and entry wall will be painted. The undercoat will start to tell me whether all white or black and white is better. I have a painter coming tomorrow to start. I will be doing some painting too, but I know he will prepare it a lot better than me.

Image 1 with bigger kitchen. Looks quite good.

Dining area is very generous at 6000mm, as is the laundry at 2500mm wide. Many laundry's are 1800 wide which is acceptable so 2500 is generous indeed. Good for ironing and clothes sorting. Cavity slider to pantry as it'll be open 99% of the time and look like 'no door'.

Make study bigger by relocating the bedroom BIR to run along the hallway wall near the door. It'll make the bedroom smaller, say 3300 (600mm for BIR) but thats still quite good for a single bedroom. Also easier to furnish as it reduces circulation pathways across the bedroom.

Also make entry area wider with the possibility of a wall to define the entry rather than entering directly into the living area. You'll need a place for coats, shoes, etc. even for guests to place down their items so a bench or a cupboard to hide everyday items is a worthy addition.

Watch out for the tall windows as they diminish your furniture placement options. Privacy and energy efficiency comes into it as well. Views are important but its a combination of everything.

Would you add any furniture/items in the dining area? It's partly why I wondered if we needed more space to make it more useable, for what I'm not sure.

Privacy isn't an issue, we're on acreage. And yes, big laundry so I can do the sorting in there. 3 kids equals lots of washing!

Our pre lim drawings do show a small wall at the entry which I'll keep, just couldn't do this on the app :)

North is kitchen side, there will be a deck that we can serve directly out onto.

I'll think about moving the BIR, there might be fights as no one will want the smaller bedroom!

I would like either a second side table, I know you have the kitchen counter but is useful for either adding to the end of the main table for indoor entertaining, or buffet style serving, or just putting flowers on ;) The space itself looks good just make sure two of you can move freely round the table when all the chairs are pulled out! and both ends (party serving)

I would purchase a big timber dining table to fill the space. Say a recycled heavy timber one. A buffet/side table/credenza would fit in too giving some more storage. More space doesn't necessarily make a space more usable but what you have here is quite good all round.

Also a veranda over the north facing deck would be good otherwise it'll be super hot in summer...

Definitely Image 1 for the kitchen. After 10 years of having the sink in the island bench I am happy to now have it under a window.

If you are placing your fridge in the pantry, a cavity wall door is much more sensible.

Not sure that fireplace is in the right position or even necessary. They are usually a place of focus - to sit around and enjoy the heat and flames. Do you intend moving your furniture around during the colder weather?
