in rentals, it's hard to create a focus around your bed without using the walls, but it can be done.

i like the idea of joinery, especially in a small room. Again using slim flat pack bookcases, the single width ones of say 300-400mm in a cool charcoal white or black, one either side of the bed, tall, and then between the two screw fix one horizontally between those, like a bridge, so the centre bookcase creates a bridge. Lay it on the floor to do this, simply screw through each end and stand up, then dress it with your fave things. Books, plants, jars and art frames. Even use baskets on the lower shelves for practical drawers.

Have you considered starting an art collection? Theoretically art gains or maintains value over time and you can take it with you.

Check out your local $2 shop/reject/hot dollar shop/Lincraft/Spotlight stores for big blank canvases (no frames) and vases etc that you can make your own. Create your own abstract art or cover it with a stunning piece of fabric to fill the space on your walls and horizontal surfaces.

Do get some table/floor lamps - any room will feel far more homely and cozy with them rather than overhead lights (just remember to use warm bulbs!).

If you can get your hands on a sewing machine - if you're creative and love to change your décor as cushion covers, lounge covers, curtains can be super expensive to buy and you can make your own unique ones - or individualize ones that you've bought to give them a designer feel)
