A new look

I have wall panelling in the living area, dining area, and hall way...it is currently stained a medium to dark brown stain. It is a approx. 120cms in height. I was thinking of painting it white and reprinting the wall area a pale grey.
Can you give me your thoughts on this. The floor is tiled throughout, and is a pale motley orangey colouring.

Go for it! Be sure to use stain blocker/primer/sealer prep coat. And probably topcoat that washes well, especially in high traffic areas like the hallway.

Yes, I agree with dohraime. Definitely white semi gloss paint on panels. The walls can be any soft muted colour, depending on your furnishings. Even a soft greige (which is my word for a beigey grey) any colour scheme would go with greige and would compliment the floor tiles...good luck

I would not worry about rug. it will bring warmth in your pale color pallet. maybe you can take coastal feel with little bit of "world traveler's feel and add some more "oriental" or "ethnic" marine theme related artifacts or accessories. which will bring together your style.

There is a product called Nanokote that you apply to the shower screen so the water just beads off when wet. Now I did try this product years ago and didn't find it that great but it could of improved by now. But my husband uses car wax on the windscreen of my car and polishes it off so water just slides of it when it rains so I am thinking of him doing this when we move into our new home shortly and see how that goes. As for tiles everyone raves about those steam machines but in the product reviews I haven't found a model that hasn't broke down after a short use.

Yes, Definitely worth the effort. I did some in an older house we had and it looked great - gave the panelling a light sand first to provide a key for the paint. You will be pleased with the results!

Agree - make sure you use the stain blocker/primer/sealer prep coat as dohraime mentioned. The change of colour will lift the area.

If the tiles are the only colour staying I'd tend to go for earthier tones in the paint colours but yes paint is the way to go.

Agree with the last comment re: the colour you choose for painting. We recently painted our wainscotting white gloss and couldn't be happier. However, we have dark wood floors. We are extremely happy with the high gloss paint. It is sooooo much easier to clean (an issue considering that the panels are situated EXACTLY where marks tend to occur). It also seems much hardier (less scuffing) and less prone to marking. Will you also have to reprint doors, frames, etc, to match? We did.

@micshack - love your hallway. I would be doing exactly as you have done.

mculbert8 - don't like the tiles, but then I hate orange. Is the grouting grey or does it just need a good clean? May need to change the colour.

@kookykaren - we saved for ten years to fully renovate our house, and that included getting rid of a whole (almost) house of tiles! Boy, do I know tiles!!
Firstly, if you're stuck with them, check out professional tile (ie, grout) cleaners. Where I live, they are always the professional carpet cleaners. They use some mighty powerful chemicals, but once they've finished, you won't have to use chemicals anymore. It isn't as expensive as you might think, and they come up beautifully.
Secondly, you can re-colour your grout. Again, it's not difficult. However, the existing surface must be CLEAN if you wish the process to work. On floor tiles, cleanliness (in terms of oils, etc) may be hard to achieve. BUT not so after you've had them professionally cleaned.
