What was/has been your most stressful part of renovating?

Hi there houzzers,
I'm at that point in my reno where it seriously just seems too much. I can now understand why those couples on the block seem so crazy!!
Hoping for some likeminded assurance that this happens to everyone and I'm not alone! When did the stress levels hit the roof for you?

Comments (9)If you're part of a couple, decorating can be about building a home environment you are both pleased with. Fortunately this is often easy as attraction is imbued with shared loves and admiration - you like the same things or you admire and adore the person and so what they like reminds you of your adoration, even if it isn't something you personally enjoy. But as you're both doing it, the decoration and features become about both of you. So for me, my own space is about those bits of me it would be unfair to impose on shared space - the obsessions, the fanboy stuff, the spreadeagled hobbies. In the house we might choose my photos that reflect our love of our current environment, while in my space the subject matter might be what I call my "boring photos" (the one's people want to ask "Why the hell did you take that?"). Likewise in my space I can spread the gear-obsession with photography over all available surfaces. And my books... I need bookcases for my eclectic tastes, leaving the more generic and shared-useful books in the shared spaces. But mostly, my space needs to have space for the person I share my life with. Yes, the area is filled with self-interest, but I need a space where my partner can come in, maybe with a laptop or a book or an iPad if they want to entertain themselves, and themselves relax, maybe two chairs & a coffee table, maybe a clear spot next to me on a long desk, maybe their own carved-out bit of space where they can just be, but all somewhere they want to be. Because, yes, I want to be alone, yes, as a reclusive, introverted person I sometimes need "clear air", but I would never want any space I occupy to have such low "WAF" (ugh, ~vomits~) that it would isolate me from the actual or potential presence of the one person sufficiently and deeply empathetic with me that they'd give me this "man space" within "our space". Comments (25)prioritise what does and doesn't work for you in your old kitchens, decide what equipment is essential for you and how much space it needs and cull everything else, don't waste money and space storing things you don't need, make sure there's a dedicated convenient spot for garbage bins, dust pan and broom and storage of food scraps, consider shallow in wall storage perfect for cans, jars, bottles and packets. Group supplies and equipment according to expected use eg enough cups and glasses for the occupants and regular visitors near the sink and kettle, everyday dinner plates stored near the stove and extras stored elsewhere. Even with very careful planning and very specific written instructions my kitchen cabinet maker put the cook top in the wrong place and 3 m of counter had to be replaced so don't assume the cabinetmaker agrees with you and have your plans scrutinised by HOUZZ to ensure that you consider all the best options for your new kitchen!!...See MorePOLL: Which space is the most overlooked in your home?

8 years agoI found that good tilers in perth wa are hard to find and for bathroom reno they ruined our bathroom with poorly laid crooked tiles. that's VERY stressful. but on the flip side stripkraft who removed my old kitchen and floor tiles did a professional job so happy with them.

7 years agoVenting the exhaust fan for the first time in a roof cavity with limited space (downstairs unit). At one stage I just lay in the cavity and chilled for 20 minutes. End result was ok.
