Corner cabinet for kitchen
Comments (3)Found this pic on Houzz of great looking corner shelving. The wallpaper detailing makes it sing! If you kept the bench height shelf for the kettle and toaster (still a tight fit!) you could start the display shelves (for mugs etc) up higher (leaving enough room for heat/steam to escape. Ideally you'd put a little cupboard (as in with doors to close it off/hide it from view) for the appliances. Doing that, you might be able to make some sort of pull out bench arrangement to give you more space, but probably not generally recommended where heat/hot water are involved…...See MoreA big empty gap, & white cabinets, or charcoal cabinets?
Comments (7)Hi Barry, I personally don't think the large blank space lends itself to a piece of art. It's up too high and contrary to your thoughts, it wouldn't be the feature you'd hope for it to be. Besides, the money you spend on a piece large enough, would be better spent on a smaller, higher quality piece mounted at the correct height (eye-level) that would compliment another part of your home. Getting back to the blank space, have you considered using a timber veneer for the wall cabinets? Something that would work with your bench, and then you could use the same veneer as wall panels to continue above the blank space over the cupboards. Perhaps you could even incorporate led strip lighting to give it a little more wow factor. Timber is great because it adds a layer of warmth to the polished concrete and dark cabinets. Good luck, and keep us posted! Would love to see which way you go. Cheers, and have a great weekend. Steve...See MoreUnder cabinet LED strip lighting
Comments (2)Like most things in building you get what you pay for. I would ask exactly what the builder has quoted. Yes, I agree $1000 to stick on a strip of cheap IKEA lights is too expensive. However he may be quoting on co-ordinating the cabinetmaker and electrician to recess a better quality, rigid, fitting into the underside of the cabinetwork, concealing the wiring and transformer so it doesn't take up valuable shelf space, or is on display, and wiring it back to your main kitchen light switch, so $1000 for all of this sounds very reasonable for the neatness, convenience and longevity.Have a look at the neat, recessed LED lighting that has been built into the side of this shaving cabinet, and is wired back through the wall to the light switch adjacent to the door. It sure looks a lot nicer than a cheap white plastic Ikea stick-on light that is plugged into a power point with the white transformer being a feature of your kitchen. The Ikea stick on LED strips often comes unstuck when subjected to the steam that builds up under an overhead cupboard in a kitchen from a kettle or a stove. Some builders are poor communicators, so if a quote seems too high ask him exactly what he has allowed for. Comments (11)custom made vanity and wall cabinets should only be needed if you have awkward sizes as an off the shelf cabinet allows you to see and touch the product and is often much more economical than custom made ...unless you need to keep some special supplies (eg 24 pack of toilet rolls?) i suggest that a base cabinet need only be 450-500 deep which is plenty for folded towels and drawers and the in wall cabinet about 150mm deep (including most of the cabinet inside the wall and only a small frame for doors and mirrors projecting out) but the in wall cabinet may depend on existing wall studs and electrical wiring so think about what you would put inside the cabinets and only have enough inside cabinet space for those items (maximum toilet roll or fat shampoo bottle about 120mm...in small bathrooms the extra floor space makes drying and dresssing much more comfortable and by rotating the shower in the family bathroom there would be less wet floor in the walkway and if the vanity in the ensuite is away from the corner you can allow space for a handtowel and/or a very convenient space to hang a hair dryer ......See Moresuancol
