Advice needed - which cover for outdoor area

Hi, we are looking at getting a cover for our outdoor area and aren't sure which to go with. (I'll post pics tomorrow). Thinking of a flyover style colourbond? Has anyone had any experience with flyover designs or outdoor roofing? Could always go dome or pending on price an insulated roof? (pics to follow)

Pictures will help. Pretty hard give advice on something unseen. There are plenty of options out there. Look for examples as you drive down the street - sometimes you may see something. I think you have seen my patio on another posting

I chose double sided roofing for mine i.e. it has colour both sides. Apparently it is pretty cool to be under. I have installed a ceiling fan too. It is from the Lysaght Outback range. I am pretty happy with it. I did consider insulated roofing (from another well known supplier) but it was so much more expensive.

I chose the style I did because I did not want a flat skillion style as I felt it would not have suited the area.

Flyover is quite ok. They usually are supported on 'Extenda' posts to your existing wall frames with the other ends on standard posts. They generally end up being quite a bit higher overall as they must miss your existing roof by around 450mm or so. The insulated roof panels are a good option as they can span large distances without any rafters. So essentially you're saving money on rafters and battens not to mention the further costs of lining underneath which can be fiddly work to make it really neat.

I'd look at ditching the awning, especially if the post is right in the middle of the new french doors. I'm assuming this opens right out onto the backyard, and it's just the awning that is narrow? You also don't sound sure about the indoor/outdoor living, so I'd suggest giving it some thought, as it will affect what you decide to do and the size of the deck/paved area. I'd recommend having a section of deck outside the door that allows you to enter and exit without falling or stepping down. This could continue so you can incorporate enough space for furniture, or it could step own to a paved patio area large enough for any furniture. A pergola could take the place of the awning, creating shade by either timber slats or planting a deciduous climber on it. If you're unsure it's worth talking to a landscape designer as they can give you some advice. Many designers offer a design consult service, where they come and discuss the options. Sometimes this is enough to clarify your thoughts and give you some direction. The advantage is they see the context and layout as well!

Advice on Outdoor Area & How to Complete our Backyard

Need assistance with doing our back yard and outdoor area! GARDEN We have top soil down in our garden beds ready for plants but are undecided about what to put in! We love contemporary style gardens, just not sure what's possible with such a narrow garden bed (approx. 400mm). We don't want to block the view from the kitchen / dining area by having plants any higher than the fence (approx. 1.9m-2m) but would like something a little higher along the 12m stretch as this will give the neighbors behind more privacy too. Other plants we have at the front of the house include Luma Apiculata, Magnolias, English box hedges and also some small (so far!) evergreen pines. We love the pleached look with hedging underneath but aren't sure if this is suitable for our area? We live in north-west Tasmania in a pretty mild climate (around 22 degrees average in Summer, 12 degrees average in Winter) but also are on the top of a hill so get quite a lot of wind. OUTDOOR AREA Current under cover area for our outdoor eating area is 6200mm x 3800mm. We have sliding doors between our dining and outdoor areas, and bifold opening doors between our dining and outdoor areas. We would like to extend the roof (somehow?!) so that it goes to where the retaining wall starts, then follows along parallel to the dining room. There are 3 large windows from the dining room looking to outside currently, which we don't want to lose all the natural light if possible so were considering a louvered roof? Or some kind of glass? Just not sure how to join it up with the existing roof sections of the house at the same time as making it flow. We wanted a fireplace with a double wood box directly opposite the sliding doors from the dining / lounge area (central to the current outdoor area), with a built in BBQ area somewhere to the right? There must be some kind of way to close this new section in if need be as it can get very cold and windy especially in winter. There are also some air-conditioning units that we don't want to move... This is the current space and roof. We don't like the gable look as it doesn't suit the modern interior of the home. The flyover would run from our living space to the fence line. We then plan to build a nice timber slat fence behind where you see the yukka plants to block the neighbours and screen the timber fence (creating a modern outdoor area).

Just hoping a flyover won't be too low and loose too much light I'm not sure if a dome would be better?

Any suggestions on colours would be greatly appreciated too... Thanks so much Houzzes!

The sandwich roof panels come in a limited colorbond range usually. Light grey, white, etc.. The darker colours can heat up and cause the product to delaminate..... Have the flyover roof designed to be at a height you prefer. The designer can work this out for you. A specialist manufacturer/installer type of company may not be the best way for you, a local designer can suggest a good local builder to construct it for you..
