Advice needed - which cover for outdoor area

Hi, we are looking at getting a cover for our outdoor area and aren't sure which to go with. (I'll post pics tomorrow). Thinking of a flyover style colourbond? Has anyone had any experience with flyover designs or outdoor roofing? Could always go dome or pending on price an insulated roof? (pics to follow)

Pictures will help. Pretty hard give advice on something unseen. There are plenty of options out there. Look for examples as you drive down the street - sometimes you may see something. I think you have seen my patio on another posting

I chose double sided roofing for mine i.e. it has colour both sides. Apparently it is pretty cool to be under. I have installed a ceiling fan too. It is from the Lysaght Outback range. I am pretty happy with it. I did consider insulated roofing (from another well known supplier) but it was so much more expensive.

I chose the style I did because I did not want a flat skillion style as I felt it would not have suited the area.

Flyover is quite ok. They usually are supported on 'Extenda' posts to your existing wall frames with the other ends on standard posts. They generally end up being quite a bit higher overall as they must miss your existing roof by around 450mm or so. The insulated roof panels are a good option as they can span large distances without any rafters. So essentially you're saving money on rafters and battens not to mention the further costs of lining underneath which can be fiddly work to make it really neat.

I've done that with an old old weatherboard...very small house. Did a semi enclosed elevated deck...as the house is on piers..slatted a-la-old Queenslander and partially enclosed with transparent roofing against the wind. The roof is colourbond interspersed with transparent corrugated panels. Have vines growing in through the slats from a garden bed near the front entry....maked for a lovely indoor-outdoor space with many uses. The vine I have is a very old plant calle Podranea...twice a year produces lilac blooms and is evergreen. Requires maintenance as is very vigourous. the rooms along the northern side of the house all open out on to this lovely indoor/outdoor space. Have a lovely fountain as well as hanging baskets. This space has opened up the whole house and protects both in summera and winter. It has made a difference to the whole ambience...so good idea....most probably your venture will involve a more modern aopproach,,,I tried to keep the "old house" image. An indoor.outdoor room is the best improvement in my opinion. Could not do without mine.

I would like to see more photos of the area to get a better perspective. It looks a very rough area and a lot of work will be involved, including building substantial steps to get up to the sitting area. Quite frankly, I would do away with grass altogether, it won't be easy to mow, especially if you are limiting it to a small area, and put a timber deck in, which could form a viewing platform for the rest of your garden. From there a simple rockery would take care of the natural slope, leaving generous pockets for plants to spill over. Do you need a play area for children at all? Have you factored this into your garden?

Were the original plants Ficus by any chance? There are trees that you could use to fit in between those day beds like the newer mop tops - not the Robinia which suckers profusely. You dont want anything too big, just a small tree with a trunk and a canopy. I would put them in between the seats and at each end and you can keep the canopies trimmed. Ficus should NEVER be planted anywhere near homes, not even as street trees - their roots are just appalling. They are great in pots, but leave them there. Another option to consider would be the native Frangipani - Hymenosporum flavum. Do some research - its fun!

I'd look at ditching the awning, especially if the post is right in the middle of the new french doors. I'm assuming this opens right out onto the backyard, and it's just the awning that is narrow? You also don't sound sure about the indoor/outdoor living, so I'd suggest giving it some thought, as it will affect what you decide to do and the size of the deck/paved area. I'd recommend having a section of deck outside the door that allows you to enter and exit without falling or stepping down. This could continue so you can incorporate enough space for furniture, or it could step own to a paved patio area large enough for any furniture. A pergola could take the place of the awning, creating shade by either timber slats or planting a deciduous climber on it. If you're unsure it's worth talking to a landscape designer as they can give you some advice. Many designers offer a design consult service, where they come and discuss the options. Sometimes this is enough to clarify your thoughts and give you some direction. The advantage is they see the context and layout as well!

This is the current space and roof. We don't like the gable look as it doesn't suit the modern interior of the home. The flyover would run from our living space to the fence line. We then plan to build a nice timber slat fence behind where you see the yukka plants to block the neighbours and screen the timber fence (creating a modern outdoor area).

Just hoping a flyover won't be too low and loose too much light I'm not sure if a dome would be better?

Any suggestions on colours would be greatly appreciated too... Thanks so much Houzzes!

The sandwich roof panels come in a limited colorbond range usually. Light grey, white, etc.. The darker colours can heat up and cause the product to delaminate..... Have the flyover roof designed to be at a height you prefer. The designer can work this out for you. A specialist manufacturer/installer type of company may not be the best way for you, a local designer can suggest a good local builder to construct it for you..
