Need help deciding best plants for front garden bed.
Comments (6)Is it a dwarf flowering gum or a big one? Many gums affect the ground beneath them, not allowing other plant competition to grow there...except azaleas, rhododendrons and other acid loving plants can do well. Another idea is to think of some native grasses, there are some excellent decorative cultivars now that are very hardy too. Some of the small lomandras could be planted in clumps of varying heights and colours, also dianella silver streak would be pretty....See MoreHelp! Tropical Plants - Narrow Garden Bed in Melbourne
Comments (13)hi Katie, my experience with my plant-beds next to the pool, (at back of pool=1 metre deep x 3 metres long) & along side of pool =50cm deep * 15m long) - .. initially I planted Palms - removed them after 15 years.. .. I re-planted the 'back-bed' with 'Birds of Paradise, large' - I removed them last year, after 10 years, bcoz they grow very big and spread in all directions & broke-up the garden-wall. Over the past few months, I have been replanting all of my garden , still in-progress- . in the beds near the pool, I have planted - ...…. Tiger Grass bcoz it is not as vigorous as Bamboo, doesn't grow as tall and is in small clumps ….. interspersed with some 'ball-shape plants'.. (for example,EUPHORBIA Ascot Rainbow, RUBY Leaf Alternanthera Dentata Compact) and some silvers - check your local nursery for small tidy, compact shrubs....or, small grasses for a different shape Make sure that whatever you plant does not have any noxious sap etc.. .. https://www.childrens.health.qld.gov.au/poisonous-plant-philodendron/ whatever you plant, there will be some drops into the pool - just make sure you turn on your vaccuum at least once a week......See MoreWhat to plant in garden beds
Comments (3)Hi Simone, I think planting the agapanthus in the front to get the full effect would look beautiful, then taller plants at the back, you could plant standard roses, verbena, even a magnolia underplanted with white agapanthus or white dietes to match the white flowers could look stunning....See MoreGardening advice / What to plant?
Comments (4)For the bed with the tree you need something that spills - silver falls or any ground cover before adding some shrubs. For the bed near the clothesline I think you need some ground covers plus a few clumping plants. Have a look at the plant search on the Gardening with Angus site for specific plants....See Moreolldroo
