Yes, chookchook2 is on the money - tongue-and-groove panelling would look great.

Our whole house is clad internally with French pine (recently purchased). In our southern rooms I find it too dark, but in a bedroom maybe this is what you're aiming for. I'm still tossing up whether to paint some rooms, but once you paint you need to paint forever, but the wood needs nothing but a dusting.

If you limewash, and semigloss varnish, you never need to repaint, and the small rooms won't look too dark. If you don't like the knots in the wood, pay extra for better quality wood, or paint.

Applying wooden cornices and baseboards finishes off the look nicely, but my dreams of having fancy ones disappeared at the cost. Budget for the cornices, they do add up, you need to get a mitre box to cut them.

Why not clad the wall without the window or door... get a beautiful wood (T&G is 'ok' but we are spoilt for beautiful woods in this country) - something local applied in big wide boards - either vertically or horizontally depending on whether you want the room to look taller or wider - so that it is a 'piece of art' in its' own right.... not partly hidden by a curtain or subject to the distractions outside the window. A 'rustic' or 'Australiana' grade of Blackbutt or Spotted Gum is hard to go past for connecting you to our iconic bush, but select grade has superb elegance. My hubby just did this to our stairwell - rustic grade blackbutt on the wall, select grade on the stairs - and it has made the centre of the house feel 'solid' and beautiful, where once it was just boring. It looks a little dark in this pic taken on my phone, but it isn't really. That's not a lightbulb you can see by the way, but rather a HUGE shade.

It's good for a trad look, but the latest look is the regular boards, or recycled "barn boards" only you need a backing of some sort, or caulking to keep out draughts.

hi everyone thanks for the great ideas well not much left of the room now it had two different ceilings heights so we are making them both the same 10 foot new double glazed windows have been ordered keeping the same double hung cottage style at the front and lovely casement timber to the side it is a long skinny room with a funny room of to one side which will be a walk in robe thanks sally

up early the day starts we have only been out here for 8 weeks gets very cold and yes we will be insulating the whole house as well as double glazing have ordered new windows for the front the have to be the same as the ones we pulled out so we are getting them made cottage double hung double glazed and casement timber around the rest of the house

a port wine magnolia and no lemon tree the garden has been very let go working on getting it cleaned up blackberries wondering dew what a real mess looking better already with a lot of hard work and some good fires
