We live next to a busy motorway. What are some good ideas to reduce the noise?

If there are a number of large windows and glass doors on the road side, double glazing definitely helps. Use the glasses with different thickness and largest possible air gap in the middle to maximise noise dampening.

We used to live on Princes Highway near traffic light which has quite a traffic all day long: tire noise, engine noise, and truck breaking noise. At night everything is a lot more audible. We retrofitted bed rooms sliding doors for the apartment with uPVC frame double glazed door and that was a big different.

Don't go the route of clip on product, like Magnetite. They don't work as well as a proper double glazed windows and doors.

Trees and big shrubs also work as a noise barrier, but yes double glazing would be top of the list.

The prices sound fair especially considering that they include installation. Viridian have a variety of glass types that are specifically designed to deal with acoustic issues. Anything will be better than 4mm float glass. A reputable window manufacturer will be able to give you great advice on glass selection, if they can't find another one! If you really want to eliminate noise you would end up with 2 panes of glass about 100mm apart but it is unlikely you need to go that far (it is an uncommon solution).

you are super-patient!!! :) :) thank you :) I'm so sorry but I do actually have a couple MORE thoughts!! argh! there are just so many different options.... and this is a bit of an all consuming puzzle to try to solve. here they are: 1) study could become main bathroom - leaving new Bed 4 as per plan since it is bigger & a better size for guests. in this option, some area could be stolen from the study to boost ensuite size - even if it just made the ensuite 1 full metre. Ideally not requiring study window to change. 2) WC could potentially be separate either within this space OR at the back of the old kitchen (allowing for the remaining, longish hall wall to be shorter again) oklouise you may think some of these ideas are not very workable & I'd be so glad for your feedback & comment (and anyone else's comments as well), it's really so incredibly helpful - unbelievably helpful - to have everyone's input. i'd love recommendations on which ideas & options might work best for that balance between function & budget

Really need an architect with the shape and fall of the land and in your design brief what you want to achieve view wise and room wise eg how many beds, views in what direction etc then they can design it best for block. Cheaper to have all plumbing together eg laundry and bathroom near each other and also there are building code rules about landings and doors which may affect your design etc. Good project and good luck

Thanks annb we just try not to think about it too much, there's the offending neighbours house of brick then a brick fence 1200 and then 1000 to the front bedroom wall and a step back of approx 3 meters to our dining open plan. We have planted a Ficus hedge on the wall and planted Olive trees in front which we keep trimmed, just a funnel. I think with power costs he doesn't use it so much thankfully, As always thank so much for your support and positive input, Forget the Claytons. x

double glazing a must we had them put in and we lived on a main road they stopped a lot of road noise and also great for winter they are not cheep but a great investment will be better for resale and star rating

We too live on a main arterial though we have bush behind us on 1 acre & road noise worse when it rains. Thickly planted gardens help but playing music really helps to distract the ear. Noise is tricky as it travels over obstacles & rolls down the other side so fencing not that effective depending in our case.

Double glazing is fine if the doors are shut so we didn't bother as ours are open most of the time due to entertainment area on that side.

White noise is said to be effective which is an ambient background noise recording played back & is supposed to cancel out the unwanted din. Has anyone used it or know of it?

Clumping bamboo is an option( definitely NOT running bamboo!!!).....grow to approx four metres high to direct traffic noise up and over and all the small leaves help to deflect the noise, and the slight 'rustle' of the leaves in the breeze help to cover residual noise........just a thought.

Yes and bamboo is soooo expensive but we have often thought of this...40 metres block width x at least 20 plants $$$

LouieT, we have planted Alphonse clumping bamboo along the side of our house.....each pot of bamboo was divided into three clumps and is going great guns, will fill in in no time :)

Do you have a photo chubbychcky? What is the aspect as our back is mostly in shade & watering will be hard in that location.

Sorry LouieT, no photos yet.....bamboo is planted in a space about 2 metres wide and 9 metres long where it only actually gets midday sun due to houses and fences bordering it. It does need a bit of water to get it started though. I bought 3 smallish pots with plenty of canes in them and divided them up......some ended up with not much root, but they have all survived and growing more canes :)

If the noise is worse at night because it keeps you awake, then retrofit double glazing is probably the best. Bear in mind, you need the windows closed for it to work, so its not worth doing if you sleep with windows open, in that case invest in some organic bamboo earplugs!
