Like any trade or contractor, there's good and bad! Please ensure you've seen examples of their work. Any reputable contractor would be happy to give you addresses of previous client jobs for you to view. With exposed concrete, the mix colour is equally as important and viewing other peoples' completed jobs will assist in your final selection. It's an expensive error to make if you get it wrong! Good luck.

Thanks Morihana. Yes, I agree. This contractor is used by & was recommended by our builder and we've seen his work at other houses they've built. I just wasn't sure if coz of that he could be more expensive, but good to hear his quote is about right, as we tend to be a bit dubious of the cheapest which aren't necessarily the best. He's also referred us to his concrete supplier who have a showroom where we've been able to see lot of different colours & options on a large scale rather than just a picture. This is what we're thinking of getting...

Thanks Bec, but we're not that inclined lol... it's a new build so it's just all dirt there at the moment anyway and his price included any excavation if required, prep, etc, so I guess it's not so bad...

Recent survey reveals going rates for Concrete in Australia

A survey produced by leading Perth Concrete Technician, Professor Harpreet Singh from Murdoch University provides insights into concrete prices. “This has been the most challenging survey I have completed in my career”, said Professor Singh.

Price ranges observed in the survey were:

• Grey Concrete $55m2 – $75m2 per square metre (m2)
• Coloured Concrete $75m2 – $95m2
• Stencilled Concrete $85m2 – $105m2
• Exposed Aggregate $110m2 – $150m2

The prices are based on the following specifications and assumptions:

• 100mm Concrete thickness
• use of reinforcement mesh
• cost of premixed Concrete (ex batching plant)
• Supplying tools and form work
• Contractor-supplied labour

My observation is that prices for Concrete certainly vary a lot and it’s important to remember that price varies according to the job. To achieve a perfect Concrete job, here are my tips:

• Contact your local concreter for quotes
• Get three quotes
• Ask to view each contractor’s work
• Don’t be in a rush – consider your budget and the quality of the finish you want
• If you cannot afford it, save up until you can!
• Remember: The cheapest isn’t always the best!

Our starting prices for exposed aggregate starts from $85 per m2 plus GST which is a very competitive price. However there are a few things that will impact the cost of your driveway so we highly recommend that the company your are enquiring to comes to your place to quote properly.

If your driveway needs levelling, include this in your budget as this always requires more work and quantity, no matter how small you think it is.

We also highly recommend that you add coats of sealer so your aggregate driveway is protected from damage created by sun, dirt, rain and chemicals.

Finally, additional services such as removing your current concrete or pavers, will also have to be included in the quote if you want to make sure you won't have any bad surprises down the line.

Exposed aggregate driveways look great but if you find the price too stiff, you might want to consider concrete or coloured concrete.
