A photo would be great, quiet often if its an old ceiling it could be calcimine making your paint peel, is it in a bathroom or laundry, that could be moisture from steam causing the problem. It may also be that the area has previously been filled and dust was on the surface prior to painting or a primer was not used. Sorry if it sound complicated but there could be numerous reasons. Whilst not exactly rustic, this slightly industrial design we made a while ago ended up with a 30% satin lacquer on the jarrah. Initially we use a 10% "flat " finish, however as soon a a plate or knife was moved on the surface, a "shiny " mark occurred. I think it really depends on how much use the piece actually gets, if its ornamental then flat looks really cool. If its actually to be used on a daily basis I would advise beefing up the gloss just a little.

I need more information about this product! I hate tiles, but the house we just bought has extensive tiled floors and tiles floor to ceiling on all bathroom walls. Worse, the tiles are standard size, flat unattractive colour with no texture. I've been looking at cladding, but I have reservations about PVC sheeting and similar products, and I figure replacing tiles with tile slabs would be very costly.
